Big streaming shows often grow into long-running franchises, but not every series is meant to go on forever. In recent years, platforms have started planning endings more carefully, especially for action and thriller titles that build large global audiences. Fans usually get very attached to characters, so any news about a final season tends to create a strong reaction online.

One of the shows in that category is The Night Agent. According to reporting from Deadline, the series is now preparing for its fourth season.

But there’s a twist: this will also serve as its final chapter. Production has already started in Los Angeles, marking the beginning of the end for the story.

The show follows Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso, a government agent pulled into dangerous missions involving political threats and secret operations. Since its release, the series quickly became one of the most-watched English-language titles on Netflix, especially during its first season, when it reached the platform’s most popular list and stayed there for a long time.

However, later seasons saw some changes in viewership. While the audience remained strong, numbers dipped compared to the breakout success of the first season. Even so, there was still enough interest from viewers to continue the story. Reports suggest that internal data showed steady engagement from fans who wanted to see Peter’s journey continue, which helped lead to the decision for a final season.

According to sources mentioned in the report, Season 3 was also received well internally at Netflix, with some executives considering it one of the strongest entries in the series so far. That creative response played a role in shaping how the story would move forward.

The production team also made early moves to prepare for Season 4. The studio behind the show, Sony Pictures Television, secured a California tax credit worth $31.6 million. This helped shift filming from New York, where previous seasons were shot, to Los Angeles. In order to qualify, production needed to begin by May, which is why filming has now officially started.

Series creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan spoke about the decision to bring the story to an end. He said, “Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey. I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”

Season 4 will also introduce several new cast members alongside returning characters. Among them are Titus Welliver, Trevante Rhodes, Li Jun Li, and Elizabeth Lail. Their roles are expected to connect closely with Peter’s final mission and the larger storylines built across previous seasons.

In Season 3, Peter’s mission took him to Istanbul, where he was tracking a Treasury agent who had fled with sensitive information. That case led him into a wider investigation involving a hidden financial network and dangerous hired operatives. The story raised the stakes significantly and set the stage for the final chapter.

With production now underway, the series is officially moving toward its conclusion. For fans, it marks the end of a long-running story that started with a surprise hit and grew into one of Netflix’s most recognized action dramas.
