Netflix has released a new British crime drama called Legends, and it is already getting attention because it is based on real events.

According to Netflix and details shared by critics, the series focuses on a secret customs operation in the UK during the early 1990s. At that time, British customs officers were struggling to stop a growing drug smuggling problem. The story follows a small group of officers who are sent undercover to infiltrate dangerous criminal networks.

What makes the mission unusual is that the agents are not trained spies. They are ordinary people from different parts of the United Kingdom. They go through basic training and are then sent into the criminal world with new identities. These fake identities are called “Legends,” and the name of the show comes from that idea.

Critics have mostly responded positively. They highlight the strong direction from Brady Hood and Julian Holmes and praise the performances of Steve Coogan and Tom Burke. The review suggests the show builds tension through identity changes and the pressure of living a double life.

The Times also gives the series a strong rating and points out Burke’s performance as a standout. It describes the show as a fast-paced crime drama with a strong early 90s setting, music, and moments of humor that feel very British.

Radio Times says the series is easy to watch and flows well across episodes. It also praises Coogan’s performance, especially the small character details that add personality to his role.

The Telegraph calls it a confident six-episode thriller that explores a lesser-known part of British crime history. It also notes that the story is based on real events, which adds weight to the drama.

Not all reviews are fully positive. Collider mentions that there are many characters introduced quickly, which can feel confusing at times, but also says this chaos adds energy to the show.

The Independent is more critical, saying the series does not reach the same level of intensity as shows like Peaky Blinders or Line of Duty. It describes it as well made but not very memorable.

The Guardian gives a mixed view as well, saying the show feels a bit restrained but still offers an interesting story overall.

All six episodes of Legends are now available to stream on Netflix.
