Dave Filoni Names His All-Time Favorite ‘Star Wars’ Character
Dave Filoni has been one of the key creative forces behind modern Star Wars storytelling, especially through animation and character-driven worldbuilding. He has played a major role in expanding the franchise beyond the films, helping shape long-running series and introducing new characters that became central to the wider universe.
One of the most important additions from that era is Ahsoka Tano, a Togruta Jedi who first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Over time, she evolved from a young Padawan into a major figure across multiple series and projects, eventually becoming one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise.
In a recent reflection, Filoni confirmed that Ahsoka Tano is his favorite Star Wars character. The reveal is closely tied to how personally involved he was in her creation and development, dating back to when he first sketched the character while working at Lucasfilm. George Lucas originally considered the name “Ashla” before the character was ultimately named Ahsoka.
Filoni and Lucas also made the key decision to connect her story directly to Anakin Skywalker, making her his Padawan. This shift helped transform Ahsoka from an early concept into a central emotional thread within the prequel-era storytelling. Filoni has previously described her as “looking back at what was, looking forward at what might be,” a phrase that reflects her place between generations of Jedi ideals and change.
Ahsoka’s debut in the 2008 Clone Wars film quickly resonated with audiences. She grew from a confident but inexperienced apprentice into a more complex and independent warrior, eventually separating herself from the Jedi Order entirely. Her design, fighting style, and personality were shaped to balance Anakin’s impulsiveness with Obi-Wan Kenobi’s discipline, giving her a distinct identity within the saga.
Filoni has often credited a wide range of influences for Ahsoka’s development, including anime and manga, with Princess Mononoke cited as a key inspiration. Over time, she became a symbol of resilience in the Star Wars timeline, especially after being wrongly accused and expelled from the Jedi Order before later returning as a key figure in the Rebel Alliance.
For Filoni, who has guided the character across decades of stories and multiple series, naming Ahsoka as his favorite reflects more than preference. It highlights the long creative journey he has shared with a character who started as a sketch and became one of the defining figures of modern Star Wars.
