Kane Parsons Talks βThe Backrooms 2β and Teases Its Future Potential
Kane Parsons is already thinking about the future of The Backrooms, even before the movie has reached theaters. The project is backed by Netflix and is set to bring his viral horror world to the big screen, but Parsons says the story may not stop there.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant at the filmβs premiere event, Parsons said he is still deeply connected to the world of Backrooms.
He explained that it would be very hard for him to fully close the door on the franchise. He also hinted that more stories could come soon, saying fans should expect new developments βin the not-so-distant future.β While he did not confirm a sequel, his comments strongly suggest that ideas for a continuation are already being discussed.
The film is based on Parsonsβ original viral YouTube horror series, which first became popular in 2022. The series showed endless yellow office-like hallways and empty, unsettling spaces that created a strong feeling of isolation and fear. The videos quickly went viral, gathering millions of views and building a large online fanbase. Parsons created the entire series himself, handling directing, writing, editing, and even music.
The movie adaptation was later picked up and developed into a feature film with support from major producers. A24 is behind the project, and writer Will Soodik worked on the screenplay. Well-known producers such as James Wan and Shawn Levy are also involved in bringing the story to theaters.
In the film, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a man named Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers a hidden dimension filled with endless, strange rooms. The story expands the original online concept into a full horror narrative. The production built large physical sets, reportedly around 30,000 square feet, to recreate the confusing and maze-like environment of the Backrooms.
The cast also includes Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett, and Avan Jogia, adding to the filmβs strong ensemble.
The Backrooms is scheduled for theatrical release on May 29. While the first film has not yet been released, Kane Parsonsβ recent comments make it clear that the universe may already be expanding beyond a single story, depending on how audiences respond.
