‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 First Look Teases Fallout After JJ’s Tragic Ending
A new teaser for Outer Banks season 5 has given fans their first look at what happens after the shocking death of JJ Maybank, according to footage shown at Netflix’s Upfront 2026 presentation.
JJ, played by Rudy Pankow, died in the season 4 part 2 finale, a moment that surprised many viewers since he was one of the original Pogues. The second half of season 4 was released on November 7, 2024, and fans have now waited over a year for the story to continue. Season 5 is confirmed to be the final season of the series, which is set to release in 2026, although Netflix has not announced an exact date yet.
At the Upfront 2026 event, Netflix showed a teaser for the final season. In the clip, the Pogues appear to be in custody and seem to be facing some kind of hearing in Croatia. Visual details like police uniforms and flags suggest the new setting, which also matches reports that filming took place in Dubrovnik.
Madelyn Cline also appeared at the event and spoke about how JJ’s death affects the story going forward. She said, “This season, our characters start out in an interesting place because of last season’s shocking finale, we’ll get to explore that. And as always, the stakes are high and the relationships between characters are going to be tested. We also tried to bring everyone home and wrap up the series in a way that the fans will hopefully love.”
She also added an emotional message about the end of the show, saying, “I’m sad but I’m also extremely grateful. We built such a bond, and y’all are literally my best friends. It’s gonna be insane not working with you guys anymore.”
Other cast members also shared their thoughts at the presentation. Carlacia Grant spoke about the show’s connection with fans, saying, “My favorite part has always been how people see themselves in us, our friendship really keeps their friendship together. It’s so cool and so loving.” Chase Stokes also thanked viewers, saying, “Thank you to everybody that has tuned in these back six years, you have given us more than we could ever give back.”
The teaser also raises new questions about the story, especially why the Pogues are in Croatia after previously heading to Lisbon, Portugal while chasing Chandler Groff, who was linked to JJ’s death.

Outer Banks was created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke. The series has grown from a local North Carolina treasure-hunting story into a global adventure. It has also been a major hit for Netflix, with season 4 part 2 reaching 1.4 billion minutes watched in its debut week, according to Netflix viewing data.
The final season is expected to continue that global scale before the story officially comes to an end
