‘Lanterns’ First Plot Details Reveal a Rural Alien Mystery, a Skeptical Sheriff, and a 2016 Setting That Changes Everything

HBO’s upcoming DC series ‘Lanterns‘ has been described since its announcement as a grounded, ‘True Detective’-style crime thriller built around two of the most iconic Green Lanterns in comics history. The show stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart respectively, with the series developed by a powerhouse creative team including Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King. From the start, it was clear this would not be a conventional superhero adventure, and early promotional material leaned heavily into the neo-Western, small-town atmosphere that sets it apart from anything else in the current DC Universe.

James Gunn himself described the project as “more of a True Detective-type mystery,” with Jordan and Stewart serving as “supercops on Precinct Earth” who stumble across “an ancient horror” hiding within the American heartland. That pitch alone was enough to generate serious anticipation, and the series quickly became one of the most discussed titles on HBO’s calendar. A trailer confirmed the buddy-cop chemistry between the two leads, offering glimpses of the Green Lantern suit, the Power Ring, and Hal in flight, while still anchoring the story in a strikingly grounded, rural tone.

Now, a detailed plot description sourced from Entertainment Weekly has added an entirely new layer to the story. Set in 2016, the show begins with a shooting in the small fictional town of Rushville, Nebraska. Hal Jordan, who has apparently been monitoring the area remotely for some time, becomes convinced the incident is of extraterrestrial origin. Standing in his way is the town’s local authority, Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, who finds no evidence to back up that claim and refuses to simply yield to the arrival of cosmic-level outside interference.

Macdonald’s Sheriff Kerry is described as a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and her close-knit community, with a resilience shaped by a complex past that anchors the town when its secrets begin to surface. The tension between her grounded, protective instincts and Hal’s alien-focused suspicions looks set to be one of the show’s most compelling dynamics. Kerry is also positioned as a potential love interest for Chandler’s Hal Jordan, adding yet another emotional thread to an already layered story.

Showrunner Chris Mundy described the series in an interview with Men’s Health as being “as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show,” and the new plot description reinforces exactly that. Mundy has spoken about the show being “in a lot of ways about replacement,” exploring the tension between when a legend should step aside and when the next generation is ready to take over, with that push and pull between Jordan and Stewart sitting at the series’ emotional core.

Production wrapped in July 2025 after filming primarily in Los Angeles, and the series is scheduled to premiere on August 16, 2026 on HBO, consisting of eight episodes. With a top-tier writing team, a cast full of serious dramatic talent, and a premise that treats its superhero mythology as the backdrop to a deeply human story, ‘Lanterns’ is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive comic book adaptations in years.
