Metal Sonic Revealed as ‘Sonic 4’ Wraps Filming—Fans Get First Look

Director Jeff Fowler has officially wrapped filming on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, marking the end of production on the next entry in the long-running video game film series.

Fowler, who has directed all three previous Sonic movies, confirmed the news on X. He shared his excitement about the project and praised the cast and crew for their work, writing, “On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can’t wait to share.”

Along with the announcement, Fowler posted a behind-the-scenes photo of himself sitting in the director’s chair. In the image, he is holding a figure of Metal Sonic, the robotic version of Sonic that was previously teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The image is now being seen as the first look at the character’s return in the upcoming film.

Metal Sonic has long been one of Sonic’s most iconic enemies in the games, and his appearance in the live-action series signals a bigger threat for the next installment.

The plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently being kept secret, but the returning cast is expected to include Ben Schwartz as Sonic, along with Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and several others. The franchise continues to expand its large ensemble of returning and new characters.

The Sonic film series has become one of the most successful video game adaptations in Hollywood history. According to box office figures, the franchise has now earned over $1 billion globally across its three films. The most recent installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in December 2024, became the highest-grossing entry in the series so far.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog film released in 2020 surprised industry expectations with strong box office performance, while its 2022 sequel increased its global success even further.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently scheduled for release on March 19, 2027.
