Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are teaming up again seven years after their acclaimed performance in Marriage Story, and Johansson is openly enthusiastic about the reunion.

The two actors previously played a married couple, Nicole and Charlie Barber, in Noah Baumbach’s 2019 Netflix drama Marriage Story, which followed their emotionally intense divorce and custody battle. The film earned major awards recognition and became one of the most talked-about relationship dramas of its time.

Now, they are back together in the upcoming crime thriller Paper Tiger, directed by James Gray. The film is set in late 1980s New York and centers on a family whose life is disrupted when Gary (played by Driver), the brother of Johansson’s character’s husband, arrives and brings danger tied to the Russian mafia.

Johansson, 41, spoke about the reunion in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I would’ve loved to have had even more scenework with him, I love working with him,” referring to Driver.

In Paper Tiger, Johansson plays Hester Pearl, who is married to Irwin Pearl, played by Miles Teller. Their family life with their two sons starts off stable, but quickly becomes unstable after Driver’s character enters their lives.

Johansson also reflected on working with Teller during filming, describing a close working relationship while on set. She said he showed a softer side during production, even staying connected while she was away doing press for another project.

The pairing of Johansson and Driver carries added weight for audiences familiar with Marriage Story, where their characters’ relationship breakdown was portrayed in emotionally raw detail. The film became widely praised and earned several awards after its release on Netflix in 2019.

At the time, Johansson previously spoke about the intensity of working with Driver, saying they spent long periods filming difficult emotional scenes. “We spent two entire days screaming at each other, brutally screaming and fighting for two full days,” she said in an earlier interview.

Despite the intensity of that experience, Johansson has continued to speak positively about her collaboration with Driver, emphasizing how important strong acting partners are to her process.

Paper Tiger is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, marking another high-profile reunion for the two actors as they return to the screen together in a very different kind of story.
