Marvel Television’s The Punisher: One Last Kill is getting attention not just for its main villain, but also for a hidden comic book character that many viewers missed the first time around.

The special focuses on Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, as he continues his violent war against the Gnucci crime family. The main antagonist is Ma Gnucci, played by Judith Light, who runs her criminal empire with extreme brutality and control. Her story is the central conflict of the special and leads to a bloody showdown in the final act.

But according to director Reinaldo Marcus Green, there is something else hidden in the background that many fans did not notice. He confirmed in an interview with The Mary Sue that another important villain from Punisher comics was quietly included in the story. That character is Barracuda, played by Jamall Johnson, who appears under the name “Barry” in the credits.

At first, most viewers thought Barry was just a small supporting character connected to the Gnucci family. The credits did not clearly reveal anything more. But later, Johnson himself confirmed on social media that he was actually playing Barracuda from the comics, which made fans go back and rethink his scenes.

Green explained that the creative team wanted to respect the original comics while still keeping the story fresh for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said, “We want to pay homage to the comics. But, also make our own thing. And, hopefully the special stands alone in it. In its own way! The Ma Gnucci character was just so much fun. And, obviously hopefully a wink to Barracuda and whatever can come from that in the future of the MCU.”

In the comics, Barracuda is one of the Punisher’s most dangerous enemies. He first appeared in Punisher MAX #31, written by Garth Ennis. Barracuda is a former special forces soldier and mercenary who became a violent criminal for hire. He is known for being extremely strong, highly skilled in combat, and completely ruthless. Unlike many villains, he also has a dark sense of humor and no real moral limits, which makes him unpredictable and terrifying.

Barracuda is not just another thug. In the comics, he is one of the few people who can physically match Frank Castle in a fight. He also causes Frank serious emotional and psychological damage, pushing him into darker and more brutal decisions. Their battles are some of the most violent stories in Punisher history.

Director Green’s comments suggest that Barracuda’s appearance in the special was not random. He hinted that Marvel Television may be setting up future stories for the character inside the MCU. He described it as a “wink” to fans, but also something that could grow later.

This makes Barracuda’s quiet introduction more important than it first seemed. Instead of being announced as a major villain, he was hidden in plain sight under a simple name change. That decision matches Marvel’s habit of placing long-term story hints inside small details for dedicated fans to discover.

The inclusion of Barracuda also expands the darker street-level world around Frank Castle. While Ma Gnucci drives the main plot of the special, Barracuda represents something bigger for the future. His comic book history shows he could become one of the Punisher’s most dangerous long-term enemies if Marvel continues to use him.

The character is now officially part of the live-action Punisher story. It remains to be seen how Marvel Television will use him next, but his introduction clearly sets the stage for more conflict ahead in Frank Castle’s world.
