Scott Patterson will not return as Harry “Sully” Sullivan in season 4 of “Sullivan’s Crossing,” marking a major change for the CW drama. The actor, best known for “Gilmore Girls,” played Sully for the show’s first three seasons before confirming his departure ahead of the new episodes.

The news was first addressed by showrunner Roma Roth, who explained that the character’s absence is tied to the story direction. She said Sully’s journey naturally leads him away from the Crossing at the end of season 3 and into life abroad.

Roth said Sully’s storyline moves him to Ireland with his partner Helen Culver, played by Kate Vernon. In her explanation, she said season 4 begins with Sully still overseas, even though the rest of the show continues at the Crossing without him physically present.

She added that the character is not erased from the story completely and still exists in the world of the series, leaving room for possible future appearances depending on how the story develops.

Scott Patterson later gave his own version of events, directly addressing his exit on social media. He explained that he chose to leave the series after disagreements about the creative direction of the character.

He wrote, “Their creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”

Patterson also pushed back against the idea that the production moved on from him. He said he felt it was important for fans to understand that the decision was not one-sided and that he left after careful thought.

He added, “It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite.”

Despite the disagreement, Patterson was clear that he has strong affection for the role and the time he spent on the show. He said he connected deeply with the character and appreciated the chance to bring Sully to life on screen.

He also said, “I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him.”

The departure changes the emotional setup of season 4, especially for the character Maggie Sullivan, played by Morgan Kohan, who is Sully’s daughter in the series. According to Kohan, the new season begins with Maggie dealing with major shifts in her life and the absence of key support systems.

Chad Michael Murray, who plays Cal Jones, also commented on the change, saying that character exits are part of television storytelling and the show continues to focus on its core narrative. He noted that Sully still plays a symbolic role in the foundation of the Crossing even if he is not physically there.

In season 3, Sully’s departure is shown as a trip to Ireland to support Helen, which becomes the explanation for his absence moving forward. Season 4 continues from that point, with the character still overseas.

Outside of the show, Patterson remains active in other projects. He is involved in upcoming films including “The Sons of Summer,” “Rogue,” and “Liberty.” He is also continuing his music career, touring in 2026 with his band on “The Midnight Highway Tour.”

For now, “Sullivan’s Crossing” moves ahead without one of its original lead characters, while leaving the door open for future possibilities depending on where the story goes next.
