Anne Hathaway has opened up about a private health struggle she lived with for years before finally getting treatment.

The information comes from her appearance on The New York Times podcast “Popcast,” where the actress spoke honestly about dealing with an eye condition during her 30s. Hathaway said she experienced serious vision problems for a long period of time before having surgery that corrected the issue.

During the conversation, she explained that the condition affected her daily life more than people would have realized. She said it reached a point where she was living with major vision loss in one eye.

“This is maybe too much information,” Hathaway said. “I was half blind for 10 years.”

She went on to explain that the problem was caused by an early-onset cataract, which is a condition that clouds the lens of the eye and makes vision blurry or unclear. Over time, her sight in her left eye became so limited that she described herself as legally blind on that side.

“It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye and I wound up getting surgery,” she said. “And I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum.”

Hathaway added that she only understood how serious the condition had become after the surgery restored her vision. Before that, she had adjusted to living with limited sight without fully realizing the impact it had on her body and daily stress levels.

“I’ve calmed down since then,” she said. “I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”

According to medical information from the Mayo Clinic, cataracts develop when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This can make everyday tasks like reading, driving at night, or even recognizing facial expressions more difficult. In Hathaway’s case, the condition lasted for years before she received treatment.

She also reflected on how grateful she feels now that her vision has been restored. She described it as something she does not take for granted anymore.

“I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” she said. “I actually am like, ‘Oh, two generations back, that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.’ So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle.”

The interview also touched on another topic Hathaway has faced recently, which is online speculation about her appearance. She responded to rumors about cosmetic procedures, saying she usually prefers not to comment on personal matters, but felt the need to speak up because the discussion became too loud.

Her comments reflect a broader issue many public figures deal with, where online assumptions spread quickly and often turn into widespread speculation.

“We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact, and sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not,” she said. “The speculation has gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there.”

She added that she still questions whether speaking out was the right decision, but explained that she wanted to stop the conversation from becoming a distraction from her work.

Hathaway’s revelation adds a personal layer to her career story, showing a period of her life where she was quietly dealing with a serious medical condition while continuing to work in Hollywood.
