The film “Backrooms,” directed by Kane Parsons, is already one of A24’s biggest breakout releases. But even as the movie arrives in theaters, Parsons is already talking about what happens after. His comments make it clear that this is not a one-and-done project. The story is planned to continue across multiple formats, and possibly multiple future chapters.

Parsons explains that the idea behind “Backrooms” was never just a single film. It started as a YouTube-based series, and that online structure still shapes how he thinks about the story. He sees it as something that grows over time instead of ending in one place.

He says he is not interested in leaving his online work behind. In fact, he expects future parts of “Backrooms” to live both on film and on YouTube. He makes it clear that the internet is still part of the creative plan and not something he is moving away from.

He describes it simply, saying “I don’t want to leave YouTube behind. I immensely enjoy the work I’ve done there.” He also adds that some projects only make sense in that space, because the internet allows more freedom than traditional filmmaking.

Parsons also confirms that “Backrooms” was always designed as a larger series, not a single story. The film now in theaters is only one part of a bigger structure. He explains that it acts as an entry point into a larger narrative that already exists in fragments online.

He says directly that the story is far from over, stating “Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film.” According to him, the movie is meant to bring new audiences into a much longer storyline that continues beyond it.

He also hints that future installments may not follow a traditional studio model. Instead, they could appear in different forms, including smaller online releases or experimental chapters. He suggests that the franchise may shift between platforms depending on what each part of the story needs.

Parsons explains that he is already working on new material connected to “Backrooms,” but he cannot reveal details yet. He describes it as something still in development and intentionally kept secret for now. He calls it a “mystery world,” suggesting that the next steps are already being built behind the scenes.

Even with the success of the film, he does not frame it as a conclusion. Instead, he sees it as a beginning stage that expands what already exists online. The focus, he says, is on continuing the story in a way that feels natural to both film audiences and long-time fans of the original series.

For Parsons, “Backrooms” is not ending. It is expanding.
