‘Backrooms’-Inspired Teaser for ‘Scary Movie 6’ Shocks Theaters With Creepy New Promo Reveal
A new teaser for Scary Movie 6 is now playing in theaters, and it is directly inspired by the viral horror concept known as “The Backrooms.” The short promo leans into the unsettling idea of endless empty spaces, but quickly breaks that tension with the franchise’s usual style of crude comedy and absurd dialogue.
In the teaser, the tone shifts between horror and humor almost instantly. One line delivered in the promo goes, “Get lost in a place so massive that it goes on and on and on… you talking about eating pussy?” The sudden shift from eerie narration to explicit comedy reflects the film’s long-running style of mixing horror parody with shock humor.
This is not the first time Scary Movie 6 has used a popular film or internet trend to promote itself. Earlier teasers reportedly referenced and spoofed other well-known titles, including Michael, as part of its marketing approach.
The new Backrooms-inspired clip continues that pattern by pulling from modern internet horror culture instead of only traditional Hollywood films.
The official trailer for Scary Movie 6 confirms that the movie will parody several recent horror and sci-fi hits. These include M3GAN, The Substance, Sinners, and Weapons. It will also revisit the Scream franchise, which has long been one of the central targets of the Scary Movie series.
Scary Movie 6 is directed by Michael Tiddes and written by a team that includes Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez. The film marks a major return for the Wayans family to the franchise after many years away. Their return has been described as a shift back toward the style of humor that defined the earlier entries in the series.
The film is also bringing back a mix of original cast members. Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans return in leading roles, alongside Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Other returning actors include Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Jon Abrahams, and Anthony Anderson. These returning characters connect the new film back to the original storyline and long-running parody universe.
The plot centers on a group of friends who reunite after a masked killer from their past returns. The story mirrors classic slasher setups but exaggerates them for comedic effect, which has always been the core formula of the Scary Movie franchise.
The franchise itself has a long history. It began in 2000 with the original Scary Movie and quickly became a major parody series in Hollywood. Over time, it expanded to include multiple sequels, with the last main entry released in 2013. The series became known for spoofing major horror films and pop culture moments of each era.
Scary Movie 6 was officially announced in 2024, and development later confirmed the involvement of the Wayans family again. According to production updates, this return was important in restoring the original creative tone of the series after years of inconsistent direction.
The film is scheduled for release in the United States on June 5, through Paramount Pictures. With its mix of returning cast members, modern horror references, and aggressive parody style, the new installment appears to be aiming for both nostalgia and updated internet-age humor.
As the Backrooms teaser shows, the marketing campaign is already leaning heavily into viral horror concepts while maintaining the chaotic and exaggerated tone that defines the franchise.
