Robert Downey Jr. Crashes Secret ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Screening at SXSW London
Fans at SXSW London got an unexpected Marvel moment during a special screening of Avengers: Infinity War, according to coverage of the event and remarks made on stage by the filmmakers and cast.
Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise appearance, joining directors Joe and Anthony Russo along with actors Anthony Mackie and Winston Duke. The event quickly turned into a wider conversation about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.
The screening was not just a celebration of Infinity War. It also became a platform for teasing where the franchise is heading next. The Russo Brothers, who directed both Infinity War and Endgame, spoke about how the Avengers team will not stay the same going forward. Anthony Russo made it clear that change is coming, saying, “You’re going to see some shifting and changing in the Avengers. Get ready for it.”
That comment added fuel to ongoing fan discussion about how Marvel plans to reshape its core superhero team after the events of the Infinity Saga. The studio has been building toward new crossover events, and Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be one of the biggest chapters in that next phase.
During the discussion, the directors also talked about the challenge of managing a large group of characters in the new film. Anthony Russo explained that the story will rely on small but important changes between characters and their actions, which can affect the entire narrative in unexpected ways. He used Thor as an example to show how one character’s choices can impact others in the larger story structure.
Joe Russo also spoke about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, this time in a very different role. Instead of Iron Man, Downey will play Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most powerful villains. Joe Russo described the approach to the character by saying, “I would say Doom hits that sweet spot between being very specific and unique to the original story that happens within this film but also delivering on what the most awesome things are about Doom in the comics.”
This casting choice has been one of the most talked about changes in the MCU. Downey Jr. spent more than a decade as Tony Stark, so his return as a major villain marks a sharp shift in direction for the franchise. Fans are especially curious to see how this transformation will play out in the story.
Downey Jr. also addressed expectations for Avengers: Doomsday during the event. He spoke about the pressure of following two of Marvel’s biggest films, Infinity War and Endgame. He said, “What we’ve been laboring so hard and long over [the past year] is… we can’t beat it and we can’t stand on the shoulders of these two giants of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ so we’re literally zeroing out the board.”
He went on to explain that the goal is to rebuild audience trust from the ground up. He added, “We’re going to try and earn your trust and respect all over again. And with the likes of these fellas, I think we have a pretty good shot.”
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to continue building the multiverse storyline and bring together characters from multiple Marvel groups, including the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. The film is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious crossover projects in the studio’s history.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for release on December 18, as reported by Marvel Studios announcements.
