House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has opened up about the evolving relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra in Season 3, while also teasing the massive Battle of the Gullet that kicks off the new season.

At the center of Season 3 is the increasingly intense bond between Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, and Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy. According to Condal, Daemon’s loyalty to Rhaenyra is absolute, but it also comes with a dangerous edge. He explained, “He [Daemon] believes with every fiber of his being that it was Rhaenyra who was always meant to take the throne, and he will stop at nothing to see it happen.”

That belief shapes much of the conflict moving forward. Daemon is fully committed to putting Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, even if it pushes him further into violence and instability. At the same time, Rhaenyra is forced to confront what that kind of support means for her own identity and leadership.

Condal described Rhaenyra’s internal struggle as a defining part of the season. He said her journey raises the question of how far she is willing to go under Daemon’s influence, adding, “For Rhaenyra, the question will be, ‘How ‘Daemon’ am I willing to become in the pursuit of my goal?’” Their relationship is no longer just political or personal, but a constant push-and-pull that shapes every major decision.

While their dynamic sits at the heart of the story, Season 3 also begins with a massive escalation in war. The Battle of the Gullet, taken from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, opens the season and sets the tone for what follows. Condal compared the episode’s scale to a major film production, saying, “This one episode was the ‘effort’ equivalent of making a major franchise movie.”

Still, even with the spectacle, he made it clear that the emotional and character-driven story remains central. The chaos of war only intensifies the pressure on Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship, forcing them to rely on each other more, even as that reliance becomes increasingly dangerous.

Condal also explained how Daemon’s mindset has shifted after the events of Season 2. He described Daemon as more focused than ever, with a clear sense of purpose that makes him both effective and unpredictable. That focus strengthens his loyalty to Rhaenyra, but also raises the stakes of every choice he makes on her behalf.

As the war for the Iron Throne escalates, their bond becomes both a source of strength and a potential weakness. Rhaenyra must decide how much of Daemon’s ruthlessness she is willing to absorb in order to win.

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres Sunday, June 21 on HBO, opening with the Battle of the Gullet and continuing the story of two Targaryens bound together by ambition, power, and an increasingly dangerous devotion.
