A fresh sneak peek dropped at IGN Live 2026 has given ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ fans their most revealing look yet at one of the most intriguing new characters heading into the third season. The clip centres on Negan crossing paths with Dillard, a lone survivor portrayed by Jimmi Simpson, and the encounter is equal parts darkly comic and deeply unnerving.

The preview opens with Negan arriving at Dillard’s bar, where he appears to be laying low from the walkers lurking inside. Dillard, however, calmly reveals that he has somehow made the zombies safe to be around, treating them as regular patrons, playing drinking games with the undead and holding personal conversations with them as he serves Negan a drink. It is a scene that establishes Dillard as one of the more memorably off-kilter figures the franchise has introduced in years.

Simpson, Emmy-nominated for his work on ‘Westworld’ and beloved by audiences as Liam McPoyle on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, plays a character who represents a potential dark future for Negan. That thematic weight is very much intentional. Showrunner Seth Hoffman has described the dynamic plainly, noting that Renata is a flip side to Maggie, and Dillard is a flip side to Negan, with Negan entering the season at a crossroads where he feels people are terrible and wants to leave everyone behind to go it alone. Dillard, Hoffman explains, is what happens when you actually do that.

Hoffman has described Dillard as a man who survived years of isolation at considerable psychological cost. The sneak peek makes that cost feel vivid and immediate. As a lone survivor whose worldview contrasts sharply with the community-building mission driving the season, Dillard functions as both a cautionary tale and a compelling foil in a season that is pushing Negan toward some of his most consequential choices yet.

Lauren Cohan has been equally enthusiastic about what Simpson brings to the show. Speaking to Bleeding Cool, Cohan called Dillard a revelation and named him one of her favourite characters across all of ‘The Walking Dead’, full stop. That kind of praise from a series veteran carries weight, and it suggests Dillard will leave a genuine mark on the season rather than serving as a brief encounter.

Simpson’s casting was announced in September 2025, alongside Aimee Garcia and, later, Raúl Castillo, with filming beginning in Fall 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. Garcia joins as Renata, a charming natural leader whose overwhelming optimism makes it easy for her to win people over, while Castillo plays Dr. Luis, a mentor figure for young Hershel.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3 premieres July 26 on AMC and AMC+. If this sneak peek is any indication, the new season is investing heavily in character dynamics built around reflection and consequence, using its fresh faces not just as plot devices but as mirrors held up to the leads. Dillard, in particular, looks set to haunt Negan in ways no walker ever could.
