The murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common in July 1992 shook Britain to its core, and few people carry the weight of that tragedy more profoundly than her son. On that summer morning, the 23-year-old mother was attacked without warning, sexually assaulted, and stabbed 49 times while her son Alex, just two years old, looked on, making him the sole witness to one of the country’s most devastating crimes.

Now, more than three decades later, a fresh wave of attention has arrived. Netflix’s latest releases, the crime documentary ‘The Murder of Rachel Nickell’ and the drama series ‘The Witness’, have reignited public interest in the case, and audiences are once again searching for answers about what became of Alex Hanscombe, the little boy at the center of it all.

Alex Hanscombe’s Childhood After the Murder of Rachel Nickell

The early years following his mother’s death were defined by trauma and upheaval. As the only eyewitness, Alex provided police with what details he could through the help of a child psychologist, and the three-year-old described a “bad man” who had come up behind him, shoved him to the ground, and attacked his mother.

In the immediate aftermath of Rachel’s murder, André made the heartbreaking decision to move with Alex to a quiet rural area of France. André later recalled, in conversation with The Times, that the pair had built an environment Rachel would have loved, full of nature, big skies, sunsets, and chickens roaming freely, and they shared some golden years there, though Alex’s teenage years proved to be deeply challenging.

Meanwhile, André coped with his grief while looking after Alex, who struggled with night terrors and sadness. The shadow of the case followed them wherever they went, with headlines and public scrutiny an inescapable presence in their lives as the investigation stumbled through the wrongful focus on Colin Stagg before the truth eventually emerged years later.

The Long Road to Healing: Alex’s Journey from Darkness to Light

As he grew into adulthood, Alex began carving out a life of his own beyond the tragedy that had defined his earliest years. Alex left school at sixteen to become a car mechanic, before later moving back to the UK to train as a session musician.

He also developed a passion for travel, spending time across Asia and Africa, and became particularly interested in yoga during visits to India. He is a certified hypnotherapist and musician, with studies in graphology, and has worked alongside his father on a collection of children’s stories entitled ‘The Adventures of Little Louis’, originally invented to amuse and stimulate Alex in his recovery when they first fled to Europe.

During his teenage years, Alex often directed his frustration and anger toward André, but over time he turned a corner, and the two now share a close and stable relationship. Alex has spoken openly about that bond, telling The Times in 2026 that life is precious and worth fighting for, and that alongside the hard times, there has been joy, the kind found in small things like sunsets and cooking together.

‘Letting Go’: Alex Hanscombe’s Memoir and the Power of His Story

One of the most significant milestones in Alex’s journey toward healing was committing his story to the page. In May 2015, he released his memoir, ‘Letting Go: A True Story of Murder, Loss and Survival by Rachel Nickell’s Son’, detailing the incident that shocked the nation and its lasting impact on his life.

The Netflix series ‘The Witness’ is based on that 2015 memoir, and Alex explained that writing the book was part of the process of trying to make sense of and come to terms with what happened, while acknowledging it remained a complicated journey.

Alex has spoken plainly about his motivation for allowing the story to be told again now, saying that previous interviews and programs had only scraped the surface, and that he believed life is a battle between good and evil, where the power for good is always greater. His hope is that something positive can come out of everyone’s pain and suffering, a message of resilience that defines how he now moves through the world.

‘The Witness’ on Netflix and Alex Hanscombe’s Role Today

Alex did not simply lend his name to Netflix’s dramatization. ‘The Witness’, a three-part fictionalized true crime adaptation created by Rob Williams, had both Alex Hanscombe and his father André serve as consultants on the production.

André revealed that the production team were accommodating and went over every line with them, something the pair said they would never forget, even as the process of condensing thirty years into a drama required difficult decisions.

Speaking on This Morning, André also revealed that the family had been approached about telling their story around thirteen years ago, but he had concerns about revisiting such a painful chapter, with their main priority being not to make the same mistakes again.

Both André and Alex Hanscombe have continued to live in Spain following the eventual sentencing of Robert Napper in 2008, and briefly returned to London in summer 2024 in connection with the production of the series. Today, André and Alex both reside in Barcelona, where André has largely kept out of the limelight, while Alex continues to travel, study, and share his experiences.

The release of ‘The Witness’ represents a deliberate and deeply personal choice for Alex, who has spent most of his life quietly rebuilding away from the public eye. In a joint statement with his father to Netflix, the pair described their life as a battle, and said their journey had been guided by a promise to go on together, expressing hope that audiences would take away a testament to faith, hope, love, and never giving up.

Now that you’ve seen how far Alex Hanscombe has travelled from that devastating morning on Wimbledon Common, do you think ‘The Witness’ has finally done justice to his story in the way he and his father always hoped it would?
