Few actresses in recent television history have navigated the blurry line between performer and character quite like Erin Moriarty. For years, she has been one of the most compelling presences in the superhero genre, bringing a vulnerability and moral complexity to Starlight that elevated ‘The Boys’ far beyond its satirical premise.

Moriarty joined the Prime Video series in 2019 as Annie January and has remained a central figure throughout its entire run, with the fifth and final season premiering in April of this year. As the show approaches its conclusion, the actress has been stepping into a very different kind of spotlight, one that belongs entirely to her.

That shift is captured beautifully in a new editorial spread for Basic Magazine, photographed by Sarah Krick. The shoot was styled by Estelle Aporongao and took place at G190 at the Pacific Design Center, with Moriarty moving through a range of distinct moods and aesthetics that feel nothing like Vought International’s corporate corridors. The images are striking precisely because of how effortlessly she commands each frame on her own terms.

The timing of the spread is no accident. In the accompanying interview with Basic Magazine, Moriarty reflected on the deeply personal nature of her connection to Starlight, describing a meta experience in which she began being recognized on the street as the character just as Annie was becoming famous within the show’s world. She said that she kept her head down, trusted the work, and accepted that while the show has an amazing fan base, there are also people who love to hate.

Moriarty was cast as Starlight at 23 and is wrapping the role at 31, meaning her entire professional coming-of-age took place inside one character’s identity. She is now searching for peace of mind and projects that allow her to step out from Annie’s shadow, both personally and mentally. The Basic Magazine shoot reads as a visual declaration of that intention.

Moriarty has also spoken publicly about facing serious health challenges while filming the final season, including being diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that affects energy levels and physical health. That context makes the confidence radiating from the editorial images all the more meaningful to the fans who have followed her journey closely.

Earlier this month, Moriarty also appeared alongside Karen Fukuhara in a Paper Magazine feature, where the two discussed how their characters have tried to hold on to their sense of identity in a chaotic world. Taken together, these editorial appearances paint a picture of an actress in active and deliberate transition, using the final chapter of one era to loudly announce the beginning of another.
