Netflix viewers around the world are quickly discovering a new crime drama that has become one of the platform’s biggest hits.

The British miniseries The Witness was released on June 4 and has already climbed to the top of Netflix viewing charts in several countries. The series has attracted millions of viewers in just a few days.

The three-part drama tells a true story that many viewers find both heartbreaking and inspiring. Based on real events, The Witness follows André Hanscombe and his son Alex after the murder of Rachel Nickell in London in 1992. Rachel was André’s partner and Alex’s mother.

At the time of the attack, Alex was only two years old and became the only witness to his mother’s murder. The series focuses on how André and Alex tried to rebuild their lives after the tragedy. It shows André’s struggles as a single father and his efforts to protect his son from media attention and the intense police investigation that followed the crime.

The story is based on Alex Hanscombe’s memoir Letting Go. Both Alex and André were involved in the production as consultants to help ensure that their experiences were portrayed accurately.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum website, Alex and André reflected on the difficult years they faced after Rachel’s death.

“Our life was a struggle,” they said. “Our journey was guided by God’s grace and the promise that we would continue together, and we feel incredibly blessed to be able to share our story in this way. We hope viewers will see it as a testimony to the difficult battles we all face in life, but also to the power of faith, hope, love and not giving up.”

The series was created and written by Rob Williams and directed by Alex Winckler. Jordan Bolger plays André Hanscombe, while Max Fincham and Jahsaiah Williams portray Alex at different stages of his life.

According to Netflix, Alex and André spent time with Bolger and Fincham during production to help them understand the emotional weight of the story.

Alex said: “They cared about getting it right and understood what it meant to us, and it’s a privilege that they represent us.”

His father also praised the actors for their commitment to the project.

“They both took the story seriously and researched it before we met, so it was important for us to know they were on the right track and that we could trust them,” André said.

Alongside the drama series, Netflix also released a documentary titled The Murder of Rachel Nickell on the same day. The documentary includes interviews with family members, investigators and others connected to the case. It also examines the controversial police investigation, which initially led authorities to focus on the wrong suspect before later scientific advances helped identify the real killer.

The Witness has received strong praise from critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently holds a 100% critics’ score based on published reviews.

With only three episodes, The Witness has managed to leave a strong impression on viewers. Many critics already consider it one of the standout miniseries of 2026, while audiences continue to discover the powerful true story behind the drama.
