‘Michael’ Biopic Shatters Records, Becomes the Highest-Grossing Music Biopic of All Time
The Michael Jackson biopic titled Michael has reached a major box office milestone and is now officially the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. The film stars Jaafar Jackson, the real-life nephew of Michael Jackson, in the lead role and has continued to perform strongly in theaters despite ongoing debate around its handling of the singer’s legal controversies.
The movie has faced criticism for downplaying or avoiding allegations of child sexual abuse connected to Michael Jackson. That criticism, however, has not slowed its commercial momentum. In its first seven weeks, the film climbed multiple global box office rankings. It became the second highest-grossing film of 2026 so far, only behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
It also became the highest-grossing release in Lionsgate’s history, surpassing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and marked the biggest box office success for director Antoine Fuqua, overtaking his earlier film King Arthur.
The biggest achievement came when Michael crossed $911.9 million worldwide at the start of its eighth weekend. That total pushed it past Bohemian Rhapsody, which previously held the record for the highest-grossing music biopic. The Queen-focused film ended its run with $911.03 million, meaning Michael narrowly moved ahead to take the top spot.
These two films now stand alone at the top of the music biopic genre. No other entry has crossed the $300 million mark globally except for them. The next closest films include Elvis with $288.7 million and Straight Outta Compton with $201.6 million. This gap highlights just how unusually large the success of Michael has been compared to other music-based biopics.
The film has also benefited from ongoing international rollout. It recently opened in Japan, and analysts expect its global total to keep growing in the coming weeks. There is speculation that it could become the first music biopic ever to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. If it does, it would also join a very small group of films to reach that milestone in 2026 and could become one of the most commercially successful biopics in history.
Deadline notes that if the film crosses $1 billion, it would have earned more than five times its production budget, which is estimated between $155 million and $200 million. This would normally signal strong profitability even before accounting for international pre-sales, which often reduce financial risk for studios like Lionsgate.

Industry attention is now turning to whether any future music biopics can challenge this record. Several projects are already in development, including films about Joni Mitchell, Jon Bon Jovi, and Dionne Warwick. However, most analysts expect these to fall closer to traditional biopic performance levels rather than reaching blockbuster territory.
One major future contender could be the planned Beatles project from director Sam Mendes. The project consists of four separate films, each focusing on a different member of the band.
It is scheduled for release in April 2028 and could generate massive combined earnings. However, there is also speculation that splitting the story into four films could spread audience demand across multiple releases, making it harder for any single installment to surpass Michael.
For now, Michael stands at the top of the genre. Its combination of controversy, star casting, and global box office strength has pushed it into record-breaking territory that no previous music biopic has reached.
