Marvel Just Dropped a Very Promising Update on ‘Shang-Chi 2’
Marvel fans have been waiting a long time for news about Shang-Chi 2. While many people are focused on upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday, there is still a lot of interest in seeing Simu Liu return in his own sequel. The good news is that the project has not been canceled.
According to comments made by director Destin Daniel Cretton on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Shang-Chi 2 is still being developed. Cretton appeared on the podcast with Wonder Man co-creator Andrew Guest and spoke about why the sequel has taken so long to move forward.
“We are developing a second one,” Cretton said. “You know, what’s going on is what went on with the entire industry since that, you know, that movie came out, like it was successful, but it actually came out weirdly. It was successful at the time when there was like a new wave of COVID was hitting. So, it was still successful, but it was also, I think many countries were completely shut down to theaters at the time. So, and you know, after that, there were just crazy changes all over the place. So, it was, it’s just a result of the industry.”
The original Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released in 2021 and quickly became one of the most popular Marvel movies of the Multiverse Saga. Because of its success, Marvel announced a sequel with Cretton returning as writer and director. However, nearly five years later, fans are still waiting for the next chapter.
Cretton explained that the delay is connected to the challenges the movie industry faced during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. When Shang-Chi was released, theaters around the world were still dealing with restrictions. Some countries had theaters closed completely, while others had limited attendance. Film productions were also working under strict health and safety rules.
Those challenges affected many projects across Hollywood, and Shang-Chi 2 appears to be one of them. The director suggested that the long wait is not because Marvel has lost interest in the character, but because the entire industry went through major changes during that period.

The delay may also be connected to Marvel’s changing plans. Since the first movie was released, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone through several shifts, including changes to release schedules and storylines. Because Shang-Chi is part of a larger connected universe, those changes could have affected the direction of the sequel.
Fans have also noticed that Shang-Chi has been mostly absent from the MCU since his solo movie. Simu Liu has not made any major appearances in Marvel films since then, which has only increased demand for a sequel. While the character is expected to return in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, many fans still want to see him lead another solo adventure.
For now, Marvel has not announced a release date for Shang-Chi 2. Still, Cretton’s latest update confirms that the movie remains in development. That may not be the major announcement fans were hoping for, but it does show that Marvel has not forgotten about one of its most popular newer heroes.
