A new supernatural love story is bringing together two familiar faces from popular film and television. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow have joined the cast of Thud, an upcoming romantic fantasy movie that will put a strange twist on the idea of a love story.

According to Deadline, Gellar and Pankow will lead the film as the Grim Reaper and the Devil. The movie will be directed by Mali Elfman, who previously made the genre film Next Exit, and is based on an original script by Noga Pnueli.

The story follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they unexpectedly meet at a three-day destination wedding. Both characters arrive at the event with plans to cause trouble, but their meeting turns into something neither of them expected. After their first encounter, the two begin to fall in love.

The project is set to film in Los Angeles after receiving a California tax credit. Producers Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste will oversee the movie, with several well-known names joining as executive producers. The team includes Lindsay Helms and Joel Nevells from Helmstreet Productions, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks from Divide/Conquer, and Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin from Radio Silence.

The film also brings Gellar back together with Radio Silence, the filmmaking group behind Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Gellar has recently appeared in several projects, including Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin and a cameo in Sony’s reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

She is also set to appear in the upcoming Tubi animated series Breaking Bear, where she will voice Blair, a member of a dysfunctional bear family. The voice cast also includes Brendan Fraser, Josh Gad, and Annie Murphy.

Rudy Pankow, best known for playing JJ Maybank on Netflix’s Outer Banks, is also building a strong list of new projects. He recently appeared in Universal’s adaptation of Reminders of Him alongside Tyriq Withers and Maika Monroe. Pankow has also finished filming Cowboy, a modern Western starring Ben Foster, and will appear in Hulu’s comedy Never Change!, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival.

Behind the camera, Mali Elfman brings experience with both fantasy and horror projects. Her first feature film, Next Exit, premiered at Tribeca before being released by Magnolia Pictures. She recently wrote and directed The Scariest Skeleton for the animated horror anthology Dark Corners, which also featured work from creators including Stephen King, Paul Tremblay, and Kate Siegel.

Elfman has also worked as a producer on projects such as Karen Gillan’s The Party’s Just Beginning, Mike Flanagan’s Before I Wake, and Birth/Rebirth.

Writer Noga Pnueli is known for creating dark and unusual romantic stories. Her screenplay Meet Cute was featured on The Black List and later became a Peacock film starring Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson. Her other script, High Society, was also featured on The Black List and is currently in development.

Thud appears to mix romance, comedy, fantasy, and supernatural elements into a unique story about two powerful figures discovering unexpected feelings. With a strong cast and experienced creative team behind it, the film is shaping up to be one of the more unusual genre projects currently in development.

Deadline first reported the casting news and details about the upcoming movie. A release date for Thud has not yet been announced.
