Stephen King has found his latest TV recommendation, and he has high praise for Apple TV’s new dark comedy thriller Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. The famous author and longtime entertainment fan recently shared his thoughts on the series, saying it impressed him even more than another popular show.

Taking to social media, King compared the series to Widow’s Bay but said the new Apple TV show takes things even further.

“WIDOW’S BAY is good. MAXIMUM PLEASURE GUARANTEED is even better. It’s like Hitchcock came back to do it one more time. And Tatiana Maslany is so good. The play of emotions on her face is pretty incredible. She goes from comic to terror in an instant.”

King’s comments quickly drew attention to the series, which stars Tatiana Maslany as Paula Saunders, a divorced fact checker whose ordinary life takes a dark turn after she becomes involved in a dangerous mystery.

Created by David J. Rosen, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed follows Paula, a New York City mother dealing with a difficult custody battle with her former husband Karl. While trying to handle the stress in her personal life, she starts using an online service and forms a connection with a webcam performer named Trevor.

Things quickly become much more serious when Trevor is attacked and kidnapped during a live video. After receiving a ransom demand, Paula turns to the police for help. However, detectives believe the situation may be a scam. Their doubts disappear when Trevor is later found dead, leaving Paula trapped in a mystery filled with secrets, lies, and unexpected danger.

The series mixes crime, comedy, and thriller elements, creating a story that constantly shifts between dark humor and tense moments. That balance is one of the reasons the show has gained attention from viewers and critics.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed premiered on Apple TV on May 20, 2026, and has already received strong reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 93% approval rating based on 56 critic reviews, with praise focused on its writing, mystery, and Maslany’s performance.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus describes the show as “a fascinating exploration of the unexpected through compelling storytelling, diverting escapades, and the undeniable assurance of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.”

Critics have especially highlighted Maslany’s ability to make Paula feel complicated and unpredictable. Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter praised the actress for showing the character’s many sides, explaining that Maslany makes Paula both sympathetic and frustrating while keeping her interesting throughout the story.

Han wrote that Maslany “effortlessly [embodies] Paula in all her contradictions” and praised how the actress avoids making the character simply likable, instead creating someone who feels real and full of flaws.

The supporting cast has also received positive attention, including Murray Bartlett, who critics praised for bringing different sides to his role.

While Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed may have started as a smaller release, Stephen King’s recommendation has helped bring more attention to the series. His comparison to classic thriller filmmaking, especially the work of Alfred Hitchcock, highlights the show’s mix of suspense, humor, and strong character moments.

With its high ratings and growing audience, Apple TV’s latest dark comedy thriller is quickly becoming one of the platform’s most talked-about new shows.
