Netflix Reveals First Look at New Danish Thriller ‘The Secret Woman’ and Confirms Release Date
Netflix has officially announced its new Danish thriller series The Secret Woman and shared the first images from the upcoming mystery drama. The series will premiere worldwide on August 28, 2026.
The Secret Woman is based on the novel by Danish author Anna Ekberg. The series is directed by Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg and written by Anders August. Production was handled by SF Studios, with Marcella Dichmann serving as producer.
Leading the cast is Natalie Madueño, who Netflix viewers may recognize from the sci-fi series The Rain. In the new thriller, she plays a woman whose entire life is turned upside down after a shocking discovery forces her to question everything she knows about herself.
The story follows Louise Andersen, a woman living a peaceful life on the Norwegian island of Hidra with her partner Joachim. Together, they run a small café and enjoy a quiet existence away from the outside world. However, everything changes when a stranger arrives and claims that Louise is actually Helene Söderberg, a woman from Denmark who disappeared three years earlier.
As Netflix explains in the official synopsis, “Louise Andersen lives a quiet life on the Norwegian island of Hidra with her partner, Joachim, where she runs a small café. One summer day, their peace is shattered when a stranger insists she is not Louise at all, but Helene Söderberg – a woman who vanished from Denmark three years earlier.”
The revelation leads Louise to uncover secrets she never knew existed. She learns that she may have an entirely different life, including a husband and a young son. Determined to find answers, she leaves behind everything she knows and begins a journey to uncover the truth about her past.
Netflix’s synopsis continues, “Driven to uncover the truth about her past, Louise leaves Joachim and the life she knows to seek out her family and discover what really happened on the night she disappeared. As she delves deeper into the mystery as Helene, she uncovers a shocking truth that turns her world upside down.”
Alongside Madueño, the series features a strong Scandinavian cast. Pål Sverre Hagen plays Joachim, the man who has shared Louise’s life before the mystery begins to unfold. Claes Bang, known for The Square and Dracula, will play Edmund. Other cast members include Stina Ekblad, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Lars Simonsen, Rasmus Hammerich, Thomas Voss, and Thea Loch Næss.
The first-look images released by Netflix tease a dark and emotional mystery. Several photos focus on Louise as she tries to piece together her past, while others introduce key figures who appear connected to the secrets surrounding her disappearance.
The Secret Woman continues Netflix’s investment in international thrillers, a genre that has become increasingly popular on the platform. With its combination of missing-person mystery, hidden identities, family secrets, and psychological drama, the series looks set to deliver plenty of twists when it arrives later this year.
Fans of Nordic crime dramas and mystery series will not have to wait much longer. The Secret Woman begins streaming globally on Netflix on August 28.
