‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 wasted no time reminding fans that the Targaryen family is unlike any other in Westeros. While the latest season has already delivered major battles and political drama, one of the most talked-about moments came from a much more uncomfortable scene between Prince Aemond Targaryen and his mother, Alicent Hightower.

The controversial moment saw Aemond, played by Ewan Mitchell, share an unexpected kiss with Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke. The scene quickly became one of the most shocking developments of the season, especially because the relationship crossed one of Westeros’ biggest taboos.

Mitchell recently opened up about filming the scene and admitted that even he was surprised when he first read it in the script. Speaking to USA Today, the actor explained that while the moment was unusual, it also made sense for Aemond’s complicated relationship with his mother.

“It was definitely weird reading that for the first time in the script,” Mitchell said. He added that he always believed Aemond was capable of making such a choice because of his deep emotional issues and his complicated connection with Alicent.

The actor explained that Aemond’s feelings toward his mother come from their shared history. When Aemond was younger, Alicent was the person who defended him after he lost his eye during a brutal childhood incident involving his family members.

According to Mitchell, that moment shaped Aemond forever. “Alicent was the only one in Aemond’s corner. She was the one telling the others that this kid has been physically maimed,” the actor told USA Today. “Aemond never forgot that from his mum. He always wanted to repay that.”

Now that Aemond has taken control as Prince Regent while his older brother Aegon is missing, his relationship with Alicent has changed even further. He is no longer the vulnerable child looking for protection. Instead, he is one of the most powerful people in Westeros and believes he can finally protect his family.

Mitchell explained that Aemond’s ambitions are tied closely to his desire to prove himself. The actor described his character as someone who wants to become the leader his mother always believed he could be, even if his methods are dangerous.

The scene itself was designed to make viewers uncomfortable. Mitchell revealed that he and Cooke experimented with different versions before deciding that a slower approach worked best. The long pause before the kiss added to the tension and showed Aemond’s attempt to see whether Alicent would reject him.

“There was something more unnerving with the slow draw in,” Mitchell explained. “He’s kind of giving Alicent the chance to pull away, testing the waters before he even made contact.”

The actor also praised Cooke’s reaction after the kiss, saying her performance captured Alicent’s discomfort and confusion. While Aemond sees the moment as an expression of his twisted loyalty and love, Alicent’s reaction suggests she understands how complicated and dangerous their bond has become.

Despite the shocking nature of the scene, Mitchell believes it fits within the larger story of Aemond’s character. The prince has always been driven by feelings of rejection, anger, and the need to prove himself, and his relationship with Alicent remains one of the strongest influences on his actions.

With the war between the Greens and Blacks continuing to grow, Aemond’s next moves could have major consequences for the future of Westeros. Fans will have to wait and see how his obsession with power, family, and revenge shapes the rest of ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3. What did you think of Aemond and Alicent’s shocking scene?
