A ‘Minecraft Movie 2’ Is Going Bigger Than Ever, Says Director Jared Hess
The world of Minecraft is getting ready to expand once again. After the huge success of A Minecraft Movie, a sequel titled A Minecraft Movie Squared is officially moving forward, and director Jared Hess has teased that the next chapter will be a much bigger adventure.
The first movie became a major box-office hit, earning around $961 million worldwide and becoming one of the biggest video game adaptations ever released. Because of that success, plans for a follow-up quickly moved ahead, with Warner Bros. and the creative team beginning work on a new story set inside the famous block-filled world.
In A Minecraft Movie, audiences followed Jack Black’s Steve as he joined forces with Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, played by Jason Momoa, and a group of new friends including Natalie, Dawn, and Henry. Together, they entered the Overworld and fought to protect creativity from Malgosha’s dangerous plans.
Now, the sequel will bring back familiar faces while also introducing new characters and expanding the story. Jack Black and Jason Momoa are expected to return, while Matt Berry will also appear in a new role after previously voicing the villager character Nitwit. The sequel will also introduce Alex, the popular female playable character from the Minecraft games, with Kirsten Dunst taking on the role.
During an interview with Collider, director Jared Hess and Mojang executive Kayleen Walters shared some details about what fans can expect from the sequel. According to Hess, the new movie will push the characters into a larger and more exciting journey.
“We’re taking Steve and Alex and going on this epic mission back into the Overworld. We’re definitely expanding their abilities and things that they have to do to get the job done.”
Hess also explained that the sequel will explore new areas of the Minecraft universe and feature locations that fans have not seen before. The goal is to make the follow-up feel bigger while still keeping the fun and creativity that made the first film popular.
One major focus for the sequel will be Alex’s role in the story. Since Alex has been one of the most recognizable characters in Minecraft since her introduction in the game, the filmmakers want to make sure she has an important place in the movie.

Walters explained that Alex is a key part of Minecraft’s history, and the team wants her movie version to properly represent the character that millions of players know.
While the first movie received mixed reactions from critics, audiences responded much more positively. The film currently holds a 47% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it earned an 84% audience score, showing that many fans enjoyed seeing Minecraft brought to life on the big screen.
The movie also became one of the top-grossing films of 2025, proving that there is still a huge audience interested in more Minecraft stories.
With a larger world, new characters, and Steve and Alex leading another mission, A Minecraft Movie Squared looks set to take the franchise in a bigger direction. The sequel is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.
