Netflix Finds Its Next Fantasy Obsession With a Major Time-Travel Series Adaptation
Netflix is expanding its fantasy lineup once again, and its newest project could become one of its biggest genre shows yet. The streaming giant has officially picked up the rights to adapt Alix E. Harrow’s bestselling fantasy novel The Everlasting into a television series.
According to Variety, Netflix won the rights after a competitive bidding process and is now developing the project for the platform. While many details are still being kept secret, the streamer has already brought in Daphne Ferraro, known for her work on Maxton Hall, to write the series. The producing team will also include Harrow and Ferraro, among others.
A release date, filming schedule, and casting information have not been announced yet. However, the project is already attracting attention because of the popularity of the original book and its unique mix of fantasy, history, and time travel.
The Everlasting tells the story of Sir Una Everlasting, a legendary hero who became one of the greatest figures in her kingdom’s history. Over the years, her real story becomes lost, replaced by songs, books, and myths that only show part of who she really was.
Centuries later, Owen Mallory, a struggling scholar and former soldier, becomes fascinated by Una’s legend. His search for the truth leads him into a journey that goes far beyond old records and forgotten stories. According to the official description shared by Variety, “Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs.”

The story follows the two characters as they discover that changing the past may be the only way to create a different future. However, rewriting history comes with dangerous consequences, and their connection across time could change everything.
The decision to turn The Everlasting into a television series instead of a movie could also work in Netflix’s favor. The book is around 400 pages long, giving the story a large world, detailed characters, and emotional moments that would be difficult to fit into a two-hour film.
A series format allows more space to explore Una and Owen’s relationship, the history of the world around them, and the larger conflicts within the story. While changes will likely be made during the adaptation process, fans are hoping Netflix keeps the elements that made the novel so popular.
The original book has already received major recognition since its release. The Everlasting won the 2026 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and was also named a finalist for the 2026 Hugo Award for Best Novel. Those achievements helped turn Harrow’s work into a favorite among fantasy readers.
Netflix has found success with fantasy projects before, and the platform continues searching for new worlds that can attract a global audience. Shows like The Witcher and Shadow and Bone helped prove there is still a strong demand for large fantasy stories.
Because The Everlasting is currently planned as an adaptation of a single novel, it could potentially become a limited series. However, if the show becomes successful, Netflix could explore more of Harrow’s work in the future. The author has written other popular fantasy books, including The Ten Thousand Doors of January, The Once and Future Witches, and Starling House.
For now, The Everlasting is still in the early stages, but Netflix appears ready to make it a major fantasy event. The biggest challenge ahead will be finding the right actors to bring Una and Owen’s powerful connection to life. If the casting and adaptation come together, Netflix may have found its next fantasy obsession.
