Maria Sten’s ‘Reacher’ Spin-Off ‘Neagley’ First Look Reveals a Dark New Mission in Chicago’s Underworld
Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley is finally stepping into the spotlight with her own story. After becoming one of the most popular supporting characters in Prime Video’s hit series Reacher, Neagley is getting her own spinoff series that will explore her past, her skills, and the mysteries she has kept hidden.
Entertainment Weekly shared the first look at Neagley and spoke with Sten, along with showrunners Nick Santora and Nick Wootton, about what fans can expect from the upcoming series.
The show will follow Neagley as she works as a private investigator in Chicago. Her life takes a dark turn when she discovers that a close friend from her past has died under suspicious circumstances. Determined to find the truth, Neagley uses everything she learned during her time with Jack Reacher and the 110 Special Investigators to uncover a dangerous secret.
While Neagley has always been shown as a strong and reliable partner for Reacher, the new series will focus on who she is when she is not helping someone else. According to Sten, that was one of the most exciting parts of bringing the character to the center of the story.
“What does Neagley feel like and look like when she is in her own world, not just coming to save Reacher’s ass?” Sten told Entertainment Weekly. The actress explained that the series will give viewers a much deeper look at Neagley’s personality, struggles, and history. One major part of the character’s story is exploring the trauma that shaped her, including her fear of physical contact, known as haphephobia.
“Neagley carries this huge mystery around her, about where her trauma comes from [and] where her haphephobia comes from,” Sten said. She added that she was excited to see how the show would explore those parts of Neagley’s life.
The new series will also introduce a fresh group of characters who will join Neagley on her mission. The cast includes Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole.
Unlike Reacher, which follows Jack Reacher as he moves from place to place, Neagley will create a more permanent world with characters who can continue appearing in future seasons. Santora explained that building this new environment was an important part of creating the spinoff.
“We had to think of a world and characters that would be beloved enough that audiences would wanna see them season after season after season because Neagley is not a wanderlust like her pal Reacher,” Santora told Entertainment Weekly.
Alan Ritchson will also appear as a guest star, returning as Jack Reacher. However, the focus will remain on Neagley and her own journey.
Lee Child, the author behind the Reacher novels, has also praised Maria Sten’s version of the character. He previously told Entertainment Weekly that Sten had completely changed how he imagined Neagley.
“Maria Sten is just the surprise star of the show to me,” Child said, adding that when he thinks of Neagley now, he sees Sten in the role.
Neagley will premiere on Prime Video on September 16, following the return of Reacher season 4 on August 12. The new series will give fans a chance to discover a different side of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.
