Timothée Chalamet & Selena Gomez Team Up for a Wild Alien Adventure in First ‘Not Alone’ Trailer
Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are heading into space in Illumination’s upcoming animated movie “Not Alone,” and the first teaser trailer has finally given fans a closer look at the original sci-fi romance.
The new film marks Chalamet’s first animated role and brings him together with Gomez for a completely new story from Illumination, the studio known for popular franchises like “Despicable Me,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” and “Sing.”
According to the film’s official synopsis, “Not Alone” follows Joe, voiced by Chalamet, and Fran, voiced by Gomez. Joe is a quiet rocket mechanic who spends most of his time alone, while Fran is a talented astro-botanist working on a revolutionary plant-powered rocket.
The two characters meet while preparing for the first launch of Fran’s experimental spacecraft. While there is an instant connection between them, romance does not come easily. “Neither is particularly adept at romance,” the movie’s description explains.
Their lives become even more complicated when three small aliens suddenly arrive on Earth and hide inside Joe’s home. The creatures, named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, are described as tiny, chaotic, and lovable beings who are running away from an unusual law officer named Zandro.
The aliens believe Fran’s rocket may be their only chance to escape Earth and safely return home.
The voice cast also includes several well-known comedy actors. Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou will provide the voices for the three aliens, while Brett Goldstein plays Officer Zandro. Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris are also part of the supporting cast.
The first teaser trailer gives the movie a warm and emotional feel, using David Bowie’s classic song “Space Oddity” to create a dreamy space adventure atmosphere. The trailer has already drawn comparisons to the early marketing for Pixar’s “Lightyear,” which also used a famous Bowie track to build excitement around a space-themed story.
“Not Alone” is a major step for Illumination because it is the studio’s first fully original movie since “Migration,” which arrived in 2023. The company has spent the last few years focusing on successful franchises, including “Despicable Me 4” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which recently became a billion-dollar box office hit.
The new project is being directed by a team of experienced Illumination filmmakers. Eric Guillon, who co-directed “Despicable Me 3” and helped design characters for several Illumination movies, is directing alongside Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val.
Dodgson previously worked as an editor on multiple “Minions” and “Despicable Me” projects, while Del Val co-directed “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “The Secret Life of Pets 2.”
Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri is producing the movie, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers.
The film combines romance, comedy, and a space adventure while introducing audiences to a brand-new world rather than relying on an existing franchise. With Chalamet and Gomez leading the voice cast, the studio is hoping “Not Alone” can become another successful original hit.
“Not Alone” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 16, 2027, from Universal Pictures and Illumination.
