Netflix Finds Its Patsy and John Ramsey for JonBenét Ramsey Murder Series
Netflix is bringing a new limited series about one of the most talked-about true crime cases in American history. The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey has found a new home at the streaming platform after previously being dropped by Paramount+.
According to reports, Netflix will release the series globally during the winter season. The project focuses on the unsolved 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a 6-year-old child beauty pageant contestant whose death became a major media story and remains one of the most debated criminal cases in the United States.
The upcoming series has also revealed its main cast. Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen will play JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. The show is written by Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach and will explore the events surrounding the case from different viewpoints.
Sources familiar with the production told reporters that the series will not only focus on the Ramsey family but will also look at the investigators involved in the case and the intense media attention that followed JonBenét’s death. The story will examine how the public, law enforcement, and the media reacted as the mystery continued for decades.
The project originally started at Paramount+. Query and Wallach first developed the idea for the series under the previous Paramount ownership. Query reportedly had a personal connection to the case because he was in the same kindergarten class as JonBenét when they were children.
Paramount+ officially picked up the limited series in September 2024, and production was completed in January 2025. However, after Skydance Global acquired Paramount, the project was reviewed by the new leadership at the streaming service. The company ultimately decided not to continue with the series, leaving the finished show without a release date.
Netflix later stepped in and acquired the project, allowing the completed series to finally reach audiences. The move gives the production a second chance after spending months waiting for a new platform.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey joins a growing number of true crime projects that revisit famous cases while trying to explore different sides of the story. Instead of only focusing on the mystery itself, the Netflix series plans to look at the people affected by the case and the way the investigation unfolded in front of the entire world.
Along with writing the series, Query and Wallach will serve as executive producers. The producing team also includes Melissa McCarthy, Elliott LaGravenese, and Liz Garbus, with David Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and David Hutkin producing for 101 Studios.
The JonBenét Ramsey case has remained a subject of public interest since December 1996, when JonBenét was found dead inside her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. The investigation received worldwide attention, with questions surrounding the evidence, the investigation process, and the people connected to the case.
Nearly three decades later, the mystery remains officially unsolved. Netflix’s The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will revisit the case with a dramatic retelling that looks at the tragedy, the investigation, and the lasting impact it has had on everyone involved.
