Marvel’s marketing team has spent months teasing that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is walking into the most chaotic chapter of his career yet, and the trailers have leaned hard into stacking up threats that feel unusually personal for a Spider-Man movie.

Between a mutating body he cannot control and a city that no longer remembers his name, the tone of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has always promised something darker than the trilogy that came before it.

That darker tone has extended to the villains as well, with the marketing rollout gradually revealing a rogues gallery that leans far more street-level than fans might expect from a Spider-Man film. Scorpion’s return has been confirmed for months, and rumors of Tombstone lurking somewhere in the background have only added to speculation about just how grounded this next chapter will actually feel.

Now Sony has shared a striking new close-up shot from the film, showing Spider-Man locked in combat with a red-clad ninja, confirming what fans have suspected since the earliest trailers dropped. Those red-clad fighters are widely believed to be agents of The Hand, the ancient ninja cult that has menaced New York’s street-level heroes for decades, first introduced in Marvel Comics back in 1981.

The Hand first made their live-action debut in Netflix’s Daredevil series, where they served as the primary antagonists of Season 2 before playing a central role in the wider Defenders Saga. Trailer footage has shown two major moments of the confrontation, with an unmasked Spider-Man grabbing one of their swords inside a prison, followed by a massive battle against many as a horde of ninjas leap toward him.

Fan theories about why exactly the Hand would target Spider-Man have mostly centered on his uneasy alliance with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. The Hand has crossed paths with Frank Castle more than most street-level characters, and a recent Marvel Comics storyline even saw him briefly resurrected by the group and installed as their leader, giving Marvel a built-in reason to fold the ninja clan into Castle’s orbit rather than Spider-Man’s.

Leaked behind-the-scenes footage has also revealed a previously unseen villain, an Asian woman who appears to be leading the Hand during their assault on Spider-Man, with speculation pointing to a comic book character named Mariko Yashida as a possible identity. If accurate, that would mark the second character connected to Wolverine rumored for the film, following persistent theories that Sadie Sink’s still unnamed role is some version of Jean Grey.

What do you think about The Hand being introduced in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’?

The official synopsis describes Peter fighting crime full time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him, with the isolation of watching his old friends move on without him sparking a transformation he may not have the power to control.

The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo, and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31, and with the Hand now officially part of the marketing conversation, it looks like Peter’s fight for survival extends well beyond the villains fans originally expected.
