Netflix’s ‘The Watcher’ Season 2 Finally Gets an Update After 4 Years
It has been a long time since Netflix announced a second season of The Watcher, and for a while, it looked like the project might never happen. Nearly four years after the renewal was revealed, new production information suggests that the series is finally moving forward.
According to multiple production sources, The Watcher is now preparing to begin production. While Netflix has not officially announced a filming schedule, several industry listings point to the series entering production later this year, marking the first major update on the show’s future in a long time.
The thriller first premiered on Netflix in October 2022. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series was originally planned as a limited series based on the real-life story of the Broaddus family and the mysterious letters sent to their New Jersey home. The show quickly became one of Netflix’s biggest hits, leading the streamer to order a second season just a month after its debut.
At the time of the renewal in November 2022, Netflix also renewed Murphy’s Monster anthology for two more seasons.
Speaking about the decision, Bela Bajaria, who was Netflix’s Head of Global TV at the time, said:
“Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, on Monster, along with Eric Newman, on The Watcher, are masterful storytellers [who’ve] captivated audiences all over the world.”
After that announcement, however, updates became almost nonexistent. The Hollywood strikes, Ryan Murphy’s new overall deal with Disney, and the lack of official news led many fans to wonder whether the second season had quietly been canceled. Even the cast had little information to share.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in January 2024, Naomi Watts, who played Nora Brannock, admitted she had not heard anything about the show’s return. “I know they said yes to the next series, but I haven’t heard anything more. To be honest, we left the house, so I don’t know if we’ll be coming back.”
Later that year, she gave another update, saying: “I don’t have an update, I’m afraid… I don’t have one, if there is one.” Executive producer Eric Newman also remained careful when discussing the future of the series. Speaking to Radio Times in early 2024, he said: “I can say nothing other than we’re very excited about the prospect of another season of The Watcher. That’s all I can say.”
Now, new production information suggests the project is finally moving again.
According to several production listings, filming was at one point expected to begin around June 2026 and continue into early 2027. However, ProductionWeekly currently lists the project as starting production in October 2026 in New York. Since schedules often change before cameras begin rolling, the exact start date remains unclear.
Netflix has not announced any casting details or story information for the new season.

That also leaves one major question unanswered. It is still unknown whether Season 2 will continue the story of the Brannock family or take a different direction entirely. Since the first season adapted a real-life case that largely reached its conclusion, many fans have wondered if The Watcher could become an anthology series with a new mystery each season.
For now, Netflix has yet to reveal its plans. Still, after years of silence, production activity is the strongest sign yet that The Watcher Season 2 is finally moving forward.
After nearly four years, are you still excited for The Watcher Season 2?
Ryan Murphy Productions and Screen Arcade are expected to return as producers, with Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan once again attached as writers and executive producers alongside Eric Newman and the rest of the producing team. More official details are expected once production gets underway.
