‘Alpha Gang’ First Look Reveals Dave Bautista, Cate Blanchett, and a Very Unusual Biker Gang From Outer Space

Sci-fi comedy has always thrived on unlikely premises, and few filmmaking duos understand that better than the Zellner Brothers. Known for blending deadpan humor with strange, heightened worlds in films like ‘Sasquatch Sunset,’ David and Nathan Zellner have spent years building a reputation for turning odd concepts into genuinely memorable cinema.

Their newest project has been years in the making, surviving a pandemic-era delay and multiple rounds of cast changes before finally landing its current ensemble. Along the way, the film shed names like Channing Tatum, Zoe Kravitz, and Steven Yeun, eventually settling into a lineup that still reads like a murderers’ row of A-list talent.

Now audiences are finally getting their first real look at the finished product. New images shared online reveal the cast of ‘Alpha Gang,’ featuring Dave Bautista, Cate Blanchett, Riley Keough, Lily Rose Depp, Chris Pine, and Adria Arjona, all decked out in matching leather jackets as the film’s titular alien biker crew.

At its core, ‘Alpha Gang’ follows a group of alien invaders who disguise themselves as a 1950s biker gang on their mission to conquer Earth. What starts as a ruthless plan for global domination quickly gets complicated once the aliens begin experiencing human emotions for the first time.

That premise gives the Zellner Brothers plenty of room to lean into the kind of absurdist tone that has defined their previous work. Blanchett plays the gang’s commanding leader, described in earlier reporting as an indomitable figurehead steering her crew through their increasingly emotional identity crisis on Earth.

The rest of the ensemble rounds out an unusually stacked cast for this kind of genre comedy. Bautista, Keough, Depp, Pine and Arjona join Blanchett as members of the gang, while Léa Seydoux, Bae Doona and Kelvin Harrison Jr. round out additional roles in the film.

Getting here was not exactly a smooth ride for the production. The project was first announced back in 2020 with an entirely different cast attached, including names like Andrea Riseborough, Jon Hamm, and Nicholas Hoult, before the pandemic pushed everything into limbo for years.

When the film finally found new life in 2024, Blanchett came aboard as both star and producer, kicking off a fresh wave of casting announcements. Several major names cycled in and out of the project over the following months as scheduling conflicts reshuffled the lineup multiple times before production actually began.

Filming eventually got underway in the summer of 2025, shooting across locations in Budapest and Croatia, including scenes at the Monument to the Revolution of the People of Moslavina. Mike Gioulakis, the cinematographer behind films like ‘It Follows’ and ‘Us,’ handled the visuals, reuniting with the Zellners after their work together on ‘Sasquatch Sunset.’

Part of what makes this first look so buzzworthy is just how eclectic the final ensemble turned out to be. Between Bautista’s blockbuster action pedigree, Blanchett’s awards season credibility, and Pine and Depp’s growing reputations in both franchise and prestige work, ‘Alpha Gang’ brings together performers who rarely share a screen together.

The film has also already secured a notable festival berth, having been announced as one of the Special Presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival. That kind of early festival attention often signals real confidence from a production, particularly for an original genre comedy without any existing franchise ties.
