Matt Damon Broke a Major Family Rule for Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ – And His Family Supported It
Matt Damon has spent decades balancing one of the biggest careers in Hollywood with his role as a father, and his latest movie forced him to make a rare change to the family rule he has followed for years.
The actor recently opened up about the personal sacrifice behind Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, explaining that filming the massive epic meant spending more time away from home than he normally allows. Speaking on TODAY on July 14, Damon revealed that his family had always followed a “two-week rule,” meaning they try not to be apart for longer than two weeks at a time. For The Odyssey, that rule had to be broken.
“It just took more, and it took more out of our family, and they had to, you know, we’ve always had a two-week rule. This was the first time that we ever had to violate it,” Damon said on TODAY.
The actor explained that filming Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem required longer stretches away from his wife Luciana Barroso and their children. Instead of the usual two-week limit, Damon said there were periods where he was gone for around three and a half weeks.
“There was like stretches of like three and a half weeks, and we were just away from each other,” he said, describing the experience as a major sacrifice for his family.
Despite the challenge, Damon said his family supported his decision to take on the role and understood how important the project was to him. After years in the industry, he viewed The Odyssey as a rare opportunity that he did not want to miss.
“It was hard on us, and I’m so proud of the movie, but I’m so proud of them for really encouraging me,” Damon said. “I feel like my whole professional life built up to this experience, and they really were really on board with me doing it, and I love them for that.”

Damon and Barroso share three daughters: Isabella, Gia, and Stella. He is also stepfather to Barroso’s daughter Alexia. The actor has previously spoken about how important it is for him to stay involved in his children’s lives despite the demands of acting.
In a past interview with The Guardian, Damon explained that the two-week rule helped him remain present as a parent. He described traveling back and forth during productions so he could spend weekends with his family, even when it meant exhausting overnight flights and demanding schedules.
“The good news is that the kids know that I’m going to be home every weekend,” Damon said at the time.
The Odyssey pushed Damon further than many of his previous projects. Speaking with Willie Geist for TODAY’s Sunday Sitdown, the actor called the movie the most difficult film he has ever made because of its enormous scale and ambition.
“Definitely the hardest movie I’ve ever done, just because it was so ambitious,” Damon said, while also calling it the “capstone” of his career.
Would you break a family rule for a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity?
Directed by Nolan, The Odyssey features a huge ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. The film brings Homer’s ancient story to the big screen with one of the most ambitious productions of Nolan’s career.
For Damon, the movie represented more than just another acting job. It was a career milestone that required a difficult family decision, but one he says his loved ones supported from the beginning.
