Samantha Morton has spent more than three decades proving that even a short amount of screen time can leave a huge impact. Now, after her scene-stealing role as Circe in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, the two-time Oscar nominee is receiving some of the biggest praise of her career.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Morton opened up about how she approached playing the powerful witch goddess from Homer’s epic poem and why she wanted to make the character feel completely alive despite only appearing in one major section of the film.

In ‘The Odyssey’, Morton’s Circe welcomes Odysseus and his men after they arrive on her island. What begins as a moment of safety quickly turns dangerous when she transforms his crew into pigs. The sequence, which was created with Nolan’s famous focus on practical filmmaking, became one of the movie’s most talked-about moments.

Director Christopher Nolan has been especially vocal about Morton’s performance. In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Nolan praised the freedom Morton brought to the role, saying, “There are no limitations on her performance.” He also compared the reaction from the crew after one of her takes to the legendary response Heath Ledger received for his work in ‘The Dark Knight’.

For Morton, the role was not about copying other versions of Circe or following outside expectations. She explained to The Hollywood Reporter that she wanted to connect directly with the script and create her own version of the character.

“This is the character here on this page. This is what I have,” Morton said. She added that she saw Circe as someone very modern and relatable, saying, “She’s my sister, my mother, my gran, my aunt, my neighbor. She felt very real and very condensed.”

Morton also revealed that she avoided becoming too influenced by other interpretations of Circe. While she researched the character and even bought Madeline Miller’s novel ‘Circe’, she decided not to let other versions shape her performance too much.

The actress said she wanted to fully take ownership of the role. “I just wanted to own it. I wanted to possess it and own it and be it,” she explained.

Part of that confidence comes from Morton’s own life experiences. She told The Hollywood Reporter that growing up in foster care and children’s homes taught her to fight for her place and believe she belonged, even in rooms filled with powerful people.

“I have a right to be here. I’m a human being. I have a right to be here,” Morton recalled.

That mindset helped her step onto a massive Christopher Nolan production without feeling overwhelmed by the scale of the movie or the star power around her. Morton said she never felt intimidated working alongside actors like Matt Damon because everyone was there to do the same job.

Although her time filming ‘The Odyssey’ was short, Morton said she loved every moment. She spent around 10 days shooting the Circe sequence and joked that she did not want to leave the set.

Morton also praised Nolan’s directing style, explaining that his guidance always made sense and helped her improve. She said every note from the filmmaker felt “poignant and relevant and right.”

After years of powerful performances in projects like ‘The Whale’, ‘She Said’, and ‘The Serpent Queen’, Morton admitted that receiving this level of attention from Nolan has been emotional.

“It validates the fact that I’m good at what I do and I care,” she said. With ‘The Odyssey’ introducing her work to a massive global audience, Morton’s Circe may become one of the most remembered performances in Nolan’s ambitious retelling of Homer’s classic story.
