Naomi Watts Celebrates Surprise ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Role Fans Never Expected
Some of the best surprises in blockbuster filmmaking aren’t the ones splashed across trailers, but the ones tucked quietly into the credits, waiting for eagle-eyed fans to spot them. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has generated plenty of headline-grabbing reveals since its release, from record-breaking box office numbers to long-rumored casting confirmations.
But one surprise managed to slip past most viewers entirely, hiding in plain sight through the film’s dialogue rather than its marketing. While the movie leans heavily on Peter Parker’s isolation in a world that no longer remembers him, one steady voice keeps him company throughout, and audiences had no idea whose voice it actually was.
That voice belongs to Naomi Watts, who has now confirmed she secretly voices E.V., an AI assistant integrated directly into Spider-Man’s new suit that monitors Peter’s vitals and web-shooter systems, analyzes combat scenarios, and assists with navigation and tactical support as he swings through New York. The surprise cameo marks Watts’ first-ever role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Addressing the secret role for the first time, Watts shared a photo of herself recording her lines virtually, with director Destin Daniel Cretton appearing on her computer screen during the session. The reveal carries extra weight given her history with the film’s leading man, since this isn’t the first time Watts and Tom Holland have shared a screen together.
Watts and Holland first worked together on 2012’s ‘The Impossible,’ the disaster drama based on a real family’s separation during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Watts played Holland’s mother in that film, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and marked Holland’s first live-action acting role, three years before he was cast as Spider-Man.
Watts leaned into that connection in her caption announcing the role, joking about the shift from playing Holland’s mother to voicing his AI companion. She wrote, “From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made). Congrats Tom, Destin, and the whole ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ team on the historic opening weekend!! Immensely proud to even just a tiny part of this incredible film!”
Holland has been equally vocal about what that early collaboration meant to his development as an actor. During a stop on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, he praised Watts for teaching him how to conduct himself on a film set, saying she let him watch a professional deliver a masterful performance while taking him under her wing and teaching him everything he knows about cinema.
The reunion runs deeper than just Holland and Watts. Watts’ voice role also reconnected her with director Destin Daniel Cretton and co-star Sadie Sink, both of whom she previously worked with on Cretton’s 2017 drama “The Glass Castle,” alongside fellow MCU alum Brie Larson.
That web of prior collaborations adds a layer of behind-the-scenes warmth to a film that has otherwise dominated headlines for its box office performance. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ had already surpassed $1 billion at the global box office within just six days of release.
For a movie built around Peter Parker’s loneliness in a world that has forgotten him, there’s something fitting about the film quietly rewarding longtime fans with a callback to where its star’s career actually began.
