2026 Could Make Box Office History With Two $2 Billion Movies

Hollywood has spent the past several years cautiously climbing back from a pandemic-era box office slump, with studios and analysts alike wondering when audiences would fully return to theaters in the same numbers as before. This year has answered that question emphatically, with 2026 already producing more billion-dollar blockbusters than any year since the pandemic began.

That resurgence has been driven largely by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which has spent the past few weeks obliterating box office records at a pace few analysts predicted. The film opened with a domestic haul of $360 million, edging out ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous record of $357.1 million, before becoming just the second movie ever to cross $1 billion worldwide faster than Endgame did.

That success has now put ‘Brand New Day’ on track to become Hollywood’s first $2 billion blockbuster since 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ with current projections estimating a final global total between $2.18 billion and $2.2 billion. If those projections hold, the film would surpass both ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ $1.92 billion and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’s’ $2.05 billion, landing among the six highest-grossing films of all time.

That milestone alone would be historic, but the bigger story is what could happen if ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ follows suit when it arrives this December. Should Marvel’s next team-up also cross the $2 billion threshold, 2026 would become the first year in film history to produce two separate movies crossing that mark, an achievement no single calendar year has ever accomplished.

Reaching $2 billion worldwide remains an extraordinarily rare feat even by blockbuster standards. Only a small handful of films in cinema history have ever crossed that threshold, a group that includes ‘Avatar,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Titanic,’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ No two of those films have ever released in the same calendar year.

That scarcity is exactly what makes 2026’s potential double milestone so significant. With ‘Brand New Day’ already effectively locking in its spot among that exclusive group, all eyes have turned to whether ‘Doomsday’ can replicate that success just a few months later.

Industry analysts have grown increasingly bullish on Doomsday’s chances, particularly given the goodwill Spider-Man’s success has generated heading into the holiday season. According to Forbes, Doomsday is expected to ride that momentum and the presence of Spider-Man himself within its ensemble cast toward numbers that could at least match, if not exceed, what Brand New Day ultimately achieves.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already pointed to Brand New Day’s outsized success as a positive sign for what’s still to come this year. In a statement to Variety, Feige noted that the film’s performance bodes very well for upcoming MCU releases, adding that when a shared universe works, these are the kinds of results audiences can expect to see.

With ‘Doomsday’ reuniting a sprawling cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. returning as the villainous Doctor Doom, alongside numerous other Avengers and X-Men characters, expectations for its December opening have only grown since Brand New Day’s record-breaking run began. Domestic box office revenue for 2026 is now projected to eclipse $10 billion for the first time since 2019, a target that both remaining tentpoles, ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Doomsday,’ are expected to help push the industry toward.

Whether 2026 actually delivers two $2 billion films remains to be seen, but the numbers so far suggest Hollywood’s biggest comeback year in recent memory is only getting started.
