‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Crossed $2.3 Billion, and the Top 3 All-Time List Is Officially in Its Sights

Box office milestones rarely feel routine, but for Sony’s latest Spider-Man installment, breaking records has become almost a weekly occurrence. Few films in recent memory have climbed the all-time charts with quite this level of speed and consistency.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, has spent the past several weeks steadily rewriting box office history, first by claiming the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, then by becoming the second-fastest film to reach $2 billion worldwide, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in that particular race.

Now, the film has pushed even further into rarified territory. ‘Brand New Day’ has already crossed $2.3 billion globally, putting it on pace to soon become a Top 3 highest-grossing film of all time.

That trajectory becomes especially clear when measured against the handful of films still standing above it. As of its most recent milestone updates, the movie had only needed to clear a relatively modest remaining gap to surpass 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at $2.05 billion, followed shortly after by 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at $2.07 billion, positioning it to become the sixth-biggest film ever at the worldwide box office before continuing its climb.

The film’s ascent has been remarkable at every stage of release. It opened with $927 million globally, becoming the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time by edging past ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous record, before crossing the billion-dollar mark worldwide after just six days in theaters.

By its third weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ had already reached $2.022 billion globally, officially surpassing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ $1.9 billion total to become Sony’s highest-grossing release in studio history. That third-weekend milestone also made it just the eighth film ever to cross the $2 billion threshold, joining an exclusive club that includes ‘Avatar,’ ‘Titanic,’ and both prior ‘Avengers’ entries to reach that benchmark.

Domestically, the film has proven just as dominant, with its $785.8 million North American total through its first seventeen days already placing it fourth on the all-time domestic chart, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and its own franchise predecessor, ‘No Way Home.’ With continued strong holds, some box office analysts have speculated the film could eventually threaten the all-time domestic box office record currently held by ‘The Force Awakens.’

Looking further up the all-time chart, only a handful of true giants remain ahead of ‘Brand New Day’ at this point, including ‘Titanic’ at $2.26 billion, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ at $2.334 billion, and the two reigning champions, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar,’ which still sit comfortably atop the list. Given the film’s continued strength deep into its theatrical run, closing that remaining gap no longer feels like a stretch so much as a matter of time.

For Sony specifically, this run represents an unprecedented achievement, with ‘Brand New Day’ now firmly established as the studio’s biggest release in its entire history. Given how rarely films maintain this level of box office strength well past their first month in theaters, the movie’s continued climb up the all-time rankings has become one of the defining stories of the year in Hollywood.

With momentum still clearly on its side, ‘Brand New Day’ appears well positioned to keep climbing in the weeks ahead, even as its theatrical window eventually begins to wind down.
