Disney’s Live-Action ‘Gargoyles’ Reboot Is Officially Dead, According To Its Creator

Nostalgia-driven reboots have become one of the most reliable strategies in Hollywood, with studios mining beloved animated classics for live-action reinvention. Few of these projects generated quite as much excitement among longtime fans as Disney’s plan to bring ‘Gargoyles’ back to screens in a darker, grittier form nearly three decades after the original series first captivated audiences.

That excitement began building back in October 2023, when it was revealed that ‘Annabelle’ writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner were developing a live-action take on the cult classic for Disney+. Dauberman was set to write, executive produce and showrun the project, describing his vision for the series as dark, serialized and mature, while staying true to the animated original’s sword-and-sorcery, sci-fi-tinged spirit.

Now, nearly three years after that initial announcement, the project’s future has taken a definitive turn. Greg Weisman, the original series’ co-creator, confirmed during a Fan Expo Canada livestream that the live-action ‘Gargoyles’ project from Dauberman, Atomic Monster and Disney+ is officially not moving forward.

Weisman added that he currently knows of no other plans in play for reviving the concept elsewhere, leaving the franchise’s live-action future entirely uncertain for the time being. The update comes as a disappointment for fans who had followed the project’s slow but steady development over the past several years, hoping to see the beloved animated world finally realized in live action.

The original ‘Gargoyles’ series, which aired from 1994 to 1997 on Walt Disney Television Animation, followed a clan of stone warriors cursed centuries earlier in Scotland who awaken in modern-day New York City after their castle is relocated by wealthy industrialist David Xanatos. Once free, the gargoyles, led by Goliath, take on the responsibility of protecting the city alongside police detective Elisa Maza, forming one of the more thematically ambitious entries in Disney’s television animation catalog at the time.

The show earned a reputation for tackling darker, more serialized storytelling than much of its Disney Afternoon programming peers, drawing comparisons to contemporaries like ‘X-Men’ and ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ for its mature tone and intricate plotting. That legacy is part of what made the live-action reboot announcement feel like such a natural fit for Dauberman and Wan, both known for their horror-tinged sensibilities through projects like ‘The Nun’ and the ‘Annabelle’ franchise.

Weisman has remained one of the most consistent voices tracking the franchise’s status over the years, previously expressing deep personal attachment to the property despite not holding ownership over it. He has spoken in the past about his continued excitement seeing ‘Gargoyles’ find new audiences through its availability on Disney+, even without any financial stake in the show’s ongoing popularity.

While Weisman noted there had been some rumblings earlier this summer about a possible new animated series, those discussions reportedly went nowhere as well, leaving fans with little concrete news about the franchise’s future beyond its existing comic book continuation. For now, it appears ‘Gargoyles’ fans will have to wait for another attempt at bringing Goliath and his clan back to screens in any format.
