HBO Max Is Retiring Its ‘Harry Potter’ Rewatch Podcast for Something Built Around the New TV Series
Anticipation for HBO’s ambitious ‘Harry Potter‘ television reboot has been steadily building for years, and the network has spent recent months laying the groundwork through a mix of casting reveals, behind-the-scenes specials, and companion content designed to keep fans engaged ahead of launch. That promotional runway has included one particularly consistent piece of programming that’s about to undergo a significant transformation.
Since launching back in May, HBO Max’s film rewatch podcast has walked listeners through each of the eight original Warner Bros. ‘Harry Potter’ movies, offering a steady stream of nostalgia-driven content as the streamer counted down toward its new series. That podcast has built a loyal following throughout its run, but its focus is now shifting entirely.
According to an exclusive report from Variety, HBO Max is officially ending the film-focused version of the podcast and rebranding it into a companion program for the upcoming television adaptation. The show, currently titled “Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast,” will become “Harry Potter: The Official Series Podcast” starting Tuesday, continuing under host Rhianna Dhillon, who will now be joined by new co-host Law Sharma.
This week’s transitional episode will feature producer David Heyman, who worked on all eight original films and is now serving as an executive producer on the new HBO series, helping bridge the podcast’s shift from film retrospective to series companion. According to the podcast’s official description, Dhillon and Sharma will dive into each new episode of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” weekly, offering reactions, analysis, and interviews with the show’s cast and behind-the-scenes creative team.
The rebranded podcast is positioned to closely track HBO’s new adaptation, which is set to debut this Christmas as the first installment in a planned multi-season series covering each book in J.K. Rowling’s original saga. Dominic McLaughlin stars as the young Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, with the trio selected from a widely publicized casting search.
Rowling herself serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, with the show being produced in association with Brontë Film and TV. The series has been promoted as a faithful, book-accurate adaptation, with each season dedicated to one installment of the original seven-book series rather than compressing the story the way the original film franchise did.
Per the official companion podcast description, the new video format will be available directly following each series premiere episode on HBO Max, as well as through standard podcast platforms. That timing suggests the show is designed to function as immediate, episode-by-episode companion content rather than a standalone retrospective.
The podcast rebrand follows HBO’s broader promotional rollout for the series, which has already included the “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic” special, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at the production’s casting, design, and creature effects work. With the series premiere now just months away, HBO Max appears to be steadily ramping up companion content to keep the fan conversation active heading into the show’s Christmas debut.
For longtime fans who’ve followed the franchise’s rewatch podcast since its launch, the shift marks a clear signal that HBO is fully pivoting its promotional attention toward the new series rather than continuing to look backward at the original films. Whether that transition successfully carries over the podcast’s existing audience remains to be seen once the rebranded episodes officially begin.
