More than a decade after his time as the web-slinger officially ended, Andrew Garfield still can’t seem to escape questions about a third ‘Amazing Spider-Man‘ film. What started as a beloved but commercially uneven franchise has since taken on a strange second life online, with fans continuing to campaign for a sequel that was shelved before it ever went into production.

That persistence has made Garfield something of a good sport on the subject over the years, fielding the same recurring question across countless interviews and public appearances. Rather than growing weary of it, the actor has continued engaging thoughtfully every time it comes up, even offering fans a genuinely candid glimpse into how he processes the idea privately.

In a new conversation, Garfield opened up about how he actually thinks through the possibility of returning to the role when the topic crosses his mind. “Like, I honestly, it’s something that I do in my idle moments, go, ‘Oh, what could that be like,’ you know,” Garfield said, according to ThePlaylist. Garfield closed out his reflection with a line that’s since caught fire online: “But I’m sure that if it’s meant to be, it’ll be.” That sentiment struck a notably different tone from some of his previous, far more definitive denials on the subject.

Garfield’s openness this time around stands in contrast to comments he made just last October, when he flatly dismissed the persistent ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3’ campaign, stating plainly that it wasn’t happening and that he didn’t believe it ever would, while thanking fans for wanting it regardless.

Elsewhere, Garfield has occasionally left the door open under very specific circumstances. He’s previously told Esquire he would return “100 per cent” if the project felt genuinely additive to the culture, built around a concept that hadn’t been done before and felt unique enough to sink his teeth into.

That complicated relationship with the role traces back to how emotionally taxing his original run as Spider-Man actually was. Speaking with Zendaya in a 2022 Actors on Actors conversation, Garfield described the experience as leaving him “heartbroken,” reflecting on how unprepared he felt taking on the role in his mid-twenties.

Despite the mixed critical reception of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ and the franchise’s eventual cancellation, Garfield’s take on Peter Parker has continued building a devoted following in the years since. His brief but emotionally resonant return in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ only reignited fan enthusiasm further, giving the character a proper send-off that the original franchise never got to deliver.
