Jim Hammond’s MCU Return? ‘VisionQuest’ Reportedly Brings Back the Original Human Torch

The Multiverse Saga has spent years teasing pieces of Marvel Comics history that never quite made it to the screen, and ‘VisionQuest‘ looks primed to finally cash in on one of the oldest Easter eggs in the entire MCU. Paul Bettany’s Vision has been quietly rebuilding his identity since ‘WandaVision,’ and his upcoming Disney+ series promises to send him deeper into his own fractured memories than ever before.

Fans got their first real hint of what that journey might involve back in mid-August, when photos from the ‘VisionQuest’ display at D23 surfaced online. Tucked among the exhibit’s artwork was a mysterious, fiery humanoid figure that immediately sent Marvel fans into speculation mode, with many pointing to a specific vintage hero whose MCU status has remained unresolved for over a decade.

That speculation has now reportedly been confirmed. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, that fiery figure is indeed Jim Hammond, the original android Human Torch from Marvel Comics, and he’s set to make his MCU debut in ‘VisionQuest.’

Jim Hammond first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 back in 1939, making him one of Timely Comics’ three flagship superheroes alongside Captain America and Namor. He was an android built by scientist Phineas Horton, and the character faded from prominence decades ago after the Human Torch name and flame powers were reworked for Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four.

The MCU has actually referenced Hammond before without fully confirming him, most notably through the “Synthetic Man” exhibit glimpsed at the 1943 Stark Expo in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’ If Hammond truly appears in ‘VisionQuest,’ it would mark the first time a Human Torch character has been part of Marvel’s mainline Earth-616 continuity, effectively making that old blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference canon at last.

His connection to Vision also runs deeper than just shared android status. In the comics, Ultron used Hammond’s dormant body as raw material to help build Vision, giving the character a direct tie to the show’s protagonist that could shape how his story unfolds on screen.

Since Vision will reportedly spend much of the series navigating a fabricated inner world built from fragments of memories that were never truly his, introducing Hammond as a figure within that headspace would let Marvel explore the character without disrupting the Human Torch mantle currently held by Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm in live-action. Quinn is expected to keep playing that role going forward, including a reported appearance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

‘VisionQuest’ also serves as the third chapter of the so-called WandaVision Trilogy, following ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along,’ and it’s bringing back other synthetic and AI-driven MCU figures along the way. James Spader is set to reprise Ultron in both AI and human form, joining a roster that reportedly includes versions of E.D.I.T.H., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and Jocasta as Vision works through unresolved pieces of his own history.

Marvel has not officially confirmed Hammond’s casting or appearance, and details about how exactly he’ll factor into the story remain unknown. Still, with the character’s ties to both Vision’s comic book origin and a decade-old MCU Easter egg, his reported arrival feels less like a random addition and more like a long-delayed payoff.

‘VisionQuest’ premieres on Disney+ on October 14, 2026, giving fans just over a month to speculate further before the mystery is settled for good.
