‘VisionQuest’ Reportedly Won’t Touch the MCU, But It’s Quietly Building Toward ‘The Children’s Crusade’
The Scarlet Witch trilogy on Disney+ is finally reaching its endpoint, and fans have spent years piecing together where the story goes after ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’. ‘VisionQuest‘ is a spin-off of Marvel Studios’ first-ever Disney+ series, and it will serve as the concluding chapter of that trilogy. With Paul Bettany’s Vision once again at the center, anticipation has been building for months over how the show connects to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The eight episode series follows Vision in his human form, working quietly at a pub and seemingly trying to move on from his past with Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen. The first trailer, unveiled at D23, showed a Vision haunted by memories and unresolved feelings, hinting that his search for identity would drive much of the season.
According to The Hollywood Handle on X, and corroborated by an exclusive report from Feature First, ‘VisionQuest’ will reportedly not tie directly into the broader MCU timeline. Instead, the series is said to function as the starting point for a loose adaptation of ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’, the acclaimed 2010 to 2012 comic run by Allan Heinberg. In that story, the Young Avenger Wiccan loses control of his reality altering powers and sets out to find the Scarlet Witch, whom he believes may be his mother, all while Doctor Doom secretly schemes to steal her powers.
That comic connection lines up cleanly with where the show already stands. Wanda has been presumed dead since ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and Wiccan, played by Joe Locke, has spent recent MCU appearances searching for his twin brother Tommy. Bettany himself confirmed at New York Comic Con that VisionQuest is set roughly one year after the events of WandaVision.
Adding another wrinkle, the report claims a previous MCU character will resurface by the end of the season to serve as connective tissue for what comes next, though the identity has not been confirmed. It also adds that Jim Hammond, the original android Human Torch from the comics, will appear briefly in a single episode, with more focus placed on the scientist who created him.
Speaking on stage during D23’s Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Bettany reflected on the character’s long journey, saying it’s been an enormous joy playing the Vision as he’s evolved over the years. He added that Vision has been an Avenger, a father, and a partner to Wanda, and that he’s helped turn the tide in some fairly enormous battles. Those comments came as Bettany appeared alongside James Spader, who returns as Ultron, during the show’s official Marvel.com panel recap.
‘VisionQuest’ premieres on Disney+ on October 14, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner, following his work on ‘Star Trek: Picard’. The cast also includes Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy. If the ‘Children’s Crusade’ rumors hold up, this quiet Vision focused series could end up being one of the most consequential setups Marvel has attempted on the small screen.
