The New ‘Harry Potter’ Trailer Just Dropped, and It’s Officially a Christmas Gift for Muggles Everywhere

Reboots of beloved franchises usually arrive with a mix of excitement and skepticism, but few properties carry the weight that ‘Harry Potter‘ does heading into a full television adaptation. HBO has spent years quietly building this eight-episode reimagining of J.K. Rowling’s original novel, and fans have had little more than casting announcements and set photos to hold onto since the project was first confirmed.

That changed back in March when HBO Max released its first teaser, unveiling the new young cast stepping into Hogwarts robes for the first time. That brief glimpse became the most-watched teaser in HBO Max history, setting sky-high expectations for whatever came next.

Now, the wait for a real look is over. HBO Max has dropped the full trailer for ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ and the eight-episode first season is confirmed to premiere on HBO and HBO Max this Christmas, arriving December 25.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as the titular boy wizard, with Arabella Stanton playing Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout taking on Ron Weasley, forming the trio at the heart of the series. They’re backed by a veteran supporting cast that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, alongside Warwick Davis reprising his film role as Professor Flitwick.

Behind the scenes, ‘Succession’ alum Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and David Heyman, who produced all eight original ‘Harry Potter’ films, back on board as producer. The new trailer traces the story’s earliest beats, opening with McGonagall walking the first-year students toward the Sorting Ceremony and running through key moments leading up to the Philosopher’s Stone itself.

Perhaps the biggest surprise attached to this rollout isn’t the trailer footage itself, but the release date. The series was originally expected to debut sometime in 2027, meaning this Christmas premiere represents a notably accelerated timeline for a production of this scale.

That faster turnaround suggests HBO is confident in where the show stands creatively, especially given the franchise’s built-in fanbase and the massive reaction the March teaser generated. With the show adapting Rowling’s first novel as its opening season and reportedly planning to dive deep into each subsequent book across future seasons, HBO appears to be treating this less as a one-off event and more as the start of a long-term, multiseason commitment to the wizarding world.

Development on the series dates back to January 2021, meaning fans have waited nearly five years to get this first real footage of the new Hogwarts brought to life. With writing on Season 2 already confirmed to be underway, HBO clearly isn’t treating this as a standalone experiment, but as the beginning of a much longer adaptation spanning Rowling’s full seven-book saga.

For longtime fans who grew up with the original film series, this new take offers a chance to revisit the story in a format built to explore the books’ details more fully than the movies ever could.
