HBO’s New ‘Harry Potter’ Series Trailer Unveils First Looks at Hagrid, Dumbledore, Snape & the Weasley Family

Casting a beloved franchise’s new faces is always a delicate balancing act, but doing it for characters whose original performers have become cultural icons raises the stakes considerably. That challenge sits at the heart of HBO’s ambitious new ‘Harry Potter’ television adaptation, which has spent months carefully unveiling its ensemble one reveal at a time.

Fans got their first proper glimpse of the young trio back in March, when a teaser introduced Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione, and Ron. That early look became the most-watched teaser in HBO Max history, setting a high bar for whatever came next in the marketing rollout.

Now HBO has released a fuller trailer, and this one leans heavily into the Hogwarts staff and extended Weasley family who round out the show’s massive ensemble. Nick Frost steps into Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow takes on Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape, with the trailer giving each performer real room to establish their own take on characters previously defined by Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman.

Essiedu’s Snape gets one of the trailer’s most memorable moments, delivering a cutting line directly to Harry in Potions class, telling him to hope he shows more talent on the Quidditch pitch than he has in the classroom. That kind of immediate, personal disdain sets the tone for how the show plans to handle Snape’s complicated relationship with Harry from the very start.

Frost’s Hagrid, meanwhile, anchors one of the trailer’s more emotional beats, reassuring Harry that family means more than just blood and that he’ll find his place at Hogwarts. That line plays directly against Harry’s own doubts shown earlier in the trailer, where McLaughlin’s version of the character admits everyone assumes he’s a great wizard even though he doesn’t feel like he knows anything at all.

Janet McTeer’s Professor McGonagall also gets several standout moments establishing her as a stern but genuine mentor figure to Harry throughout his first year, while Lithgow’s Dumbledore appears in multiple scenes scanning the Great Hall and guiding the school’s youngest students through their earliest days at Hogwarts.

Beyond the central trio and faculty, the trailer spends real time introducing the extended Weasley clan, with Katherine Parkinson playing Molly Weasley alongside Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland as twins Fred and George, Ruari Spooner as Percy, and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny. Ron’s introduction in the trailer shows him squeezed among his brothers at home before boarding the Hogwarts Express, setting up the family dynamic that’s long been a fan-favorite element of the books.

The broader cast rounds out with Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, alongside younger cast members including Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy and Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom. That depth of casting reflects the show’s stated commitment to serving as a faithful, book-by-book adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original seven-novel saga rather than compressing storylines the way the film franchise sometimes had to.

With showrunner Francesca Gardiner and ‘Succession’ director Mark Mylod leading the creative team, and the eight-episode first season premiering December 25 on HBO and HBO Max, this new ensemble now carries the responsibility of introducing an entirely new generation to Hogwarts.
