‘Chad Powers’ Season 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Did Coach Hudson Finally See Through Russ’s Disguise?

A disgraced quarterback hiding behind elaborate prosthetics to sneak back onto the field sounds like something out of a sketch, and that’s exactly where the idea came from.

That origin story hasn’t stopped ‘Chad Powers‘ from evolving into something with real emotional stakes, especially once Season 1 ended with coach Ricky Hudson uncovering Russ Holliday’s secret identity. Season 2 picked up that thread immediately, refusing to let the show reset back to easy disguise-comedy territory.

Now, with the Season 2 finale titled “12th Quarter” streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, the season has delivered its most chaotic stretch yet, closing out with revelations, a nail-biting football finish, and a cliffhanger that leaves Russ’s secret hanging by a thread. Here’s exactly how it all went down.

Throughout the season, Russ’s teammate Gerry grew increasingly suspicious of Chad, going so far as stalking the quarterback and everyone close to him. He didn’t know Russ was hiding behind a prosthetic mask, but he sensed something was deeply wrong, especially after spotting Coach Ricky sneaking around and catching a glimpse of Chad’s supposed father, “Howard Powers,” wearing an obvious wig and prosthetic nose at the homecoming banquet.

That suspicion reached a breaking point in the penultimate episode, “11th Quarter,” when Gerry broke into Russ and Danny’s house and attacked Danny, stealing the prosthetics used to disguise Russ as Chad. The finale opens in the aftermath of that break-in, with Russ meeting Gerry at a movie theater, where the backup quarterback made his demands clear: throw the final regular season game against Texas on purpose, take the blame for planting a fake gun in Gerry’s locker, and Gerry would stay quiet about Chad’s true identity.

A devastated Russ agreed to Gerry’s terms, but Ricky and Danny weren’t fooled by his forced calm. Once Ricky learned the full details of Gerry’s scheme, including the $200,000 bet riding on Chad playing a historically bad game, she made a choice of her own.

Despite having just accepted a coaching job at Syracuse, Ricky decided to help Chad win anyway, drawing on old game tape from Russ’s Oregon days to call trick plays that pushed the Catfish back into contention. It worked, setting up a tense final sequence where Chad had to choose between honoring Gerry’s rules or breaking them to score the winning touchdown.

After a heartfelt exchange with Coach Hudson, who told him he was proud of the season regardless of outcome, Chad ran the ball in for the real, unrigged win. Gerry stormed the field in a rage, only to be knocked out cold by Tricia Yeager’s security guard, who revealed that Tricia already knew Chad’s true identity, having learned it from Danny, and had negotiated to keep Russ and Danny “safe” by moving them onto her ranch.

The episode’s final twist comes in the locker room, where Ricky and Russ share an emotional moment as she helps fix his prosthetic before her planned move to New York. Overcome with emotion, Russ confesses his love for her, and the two share their first kiss, which quickly turns passionate enough that Ricky begins pulling off the remaining prosthetic on his face.

Before the reveal can fully happen, Coach Hudson bursts through the locker room door, and the episode cuts to black just as Russ turns away to hide his slipping mask. It’s left deliberately unclear how much Hudson actually saw, setting up a major question mark heading into any future season.

Several threads remain unresolved, including whether Hudson recognized Russ, whether Ricky will still leave for Syracuse after her locker room moment with Chad, and whether Gerry is truly out of the picture for good.
