Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Suit Was Used in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Test Footage

Multiverse crossovers have a way of leaving lasting marks on the characters involved, even after the dust settles and everyone returns to their own corner of reality. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ brought that idea to life in spectacular fashion, uniting three generations of Peter Parkers on screen for the first time and giving fans a moment they’d been dreaming about for years.

That crossover clearly left an impression behind the scenes as much as on screen. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, following his encounter with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character, carried that experience directly into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ resulting in a costume redesign built specifically around honoring his fellow web-slingers.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video shared by Sony Pictures, Holland explained the thinking behind the new suit. “When we decided that we’re going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said, what if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey and Andrew’s designs because my Peter Parker had met those guys. So we kind of created a Spider-Child of all three costumes,” Holland said, according to GamesRadar+.

That “Spider-Child” concept translated into several specific design choices pulled directly from Garfield’s and Maguire’s respective costumes. According to CBR, Sanja Milkovic Hays, the film’s costume designer, confirmed in an interview that fan speculation about the suit’s inspirations was accurate, addressing details like the web-shooters and mask design that fans had already started picking apart online.

One of the clearest nods involves the web-shooters themselves. According to JustWatch, Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man films featured compact web-shooters mounted on the outside of the suit, a design choice that heavily influenced Holland’s new costume, with his own web-shooters similarly magnetized to the outside of his outfit in ‘Brand New Day.’

The homage extends beyond just gadgets. Director Destin Daniel Cretton pointed out that the new mask allows viewers to catch glimpses of the “human” beneath the costume, ditching the tech-heavy face shield in favor of something that feels more grounded, closer to the practical, homemade aesthetic Peter Parker built without access to Stark technology.

Beyond the main suit redesign, ‘Brand New Day’ also included a smaller but pointed callback to Garfield’s era. Behind-the-scenes footage titled “Practical Production,” released by Sony, revealed Holland’s Spider-Man wearing a winter-adapted look layered over his base suit, complete with a stocking cap and puffer vest to combat cold weather during filming.

That specific styling choice directly echoes a memorable moment from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ when Garfield’s Peter Parker similarly bundled up against the cold while still managing to intervene in a robbery despite being visibly under the weather. That small detail became one of the more talked-about Easter eggs once fans spotted the connection in the new footage.

With Holland’s Peter Parker now operating without Stark tech, forced to build his own gear from scratch following the memory-erasing spell at the end of ‘No Way Home,’ the new suit’s homemade, patchwork aesthetic makes narrative sense alongside its tribute to Garfield and Maguire’s legacies. The costume effectively bridges three eras of Spider-Man storytelling into a single design.

Given how much attention fans have paid to these details since the film’s release, it’s clear the tribute resonated widely with longtime fans of the franchise.
