Nova Writer Confirms the MCU Movie Will Have to Address Thanos’ Destruction of Xandar

Marvel Studios has never shied away from letting its interconnected timeline create headaches for future storytellers, and the cosmic corner of the MCU has plenty of unresolved fallout still lingering from the Infinity Saga. Few plot threads remain as conspicuously unaddressed as what happened to the Nova Corps.

Fans have wondered for years how Marvel would eventually handle bringing Richard Rider into live action, given that the character’s entire comic book origin is tied to a devastating attack on his home planet. With a Nova project finally moving through development, that question has only grown more pressing.

Now the writer attached to the project has confirmed exactly what many fans suspected. Speaking with TheWrap about his work on Nova, Michael Waldron addressed the Nova Corps’ destruction directly when asked whether the story would need to confront it, saying, “They would have to reckon with that. Yeah.”

That confirmation matters because of just how significant the Nova Corps’ fate has been left dangling since ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ In that film, Thanos decimates the planet Xandar in his search for the Power Stone, wiping out the intergalactic police force that had previously appeared as supporting players in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’

That destruction carries extra weight for anyone familiar with Richard Rider’s comic book history. In the beloved “Annihilation” storyline, which Waldron has separately named as his favorite Nova comic, Rider becomes the sole survivor of a similar attack by the villain Annihilus, absorbing the entire Nova Force into his body and merging with the Xandarian Worldmind to lead a resistance effort.

Given how closely the Xandar destruction in “Infinity War” mirrors that comic book origin, some of Rider’s most iconic backstory could theoretically be adapted into the film without requiring much additional narrative setup. Whether Waldron’s project actually leans into that parallel remains unconfirmed, since he stopped short of revealing specific plot details tied to his involvement.

Waldron was careful throughout the conversation to avoid confirming too much about the project overall, noting at one point that he wasn’t sure how much he could say about anything he’s working on with Marvel. Still, he made his enthusiasm for the character clear, expressing genuine excitement about the character and hope that whoever eventually plays Rider does the role justice.

Part of what has made Nova such a difficult character to bring to screen is the sheer amount of comic book history tied to Richard Rider across multiple eras. Waldron pointed to that complexity as one reason the character has taken so long to get his own project, noting the challenge of figuring out where exactly to begin his story, whether grounded on Earth or already active within the Nova Corps.

Development on the project has reportedly had its share of stops and starts, with reports earlier this year indicating Marvel had briefly paused work on Nova alongside several other projects during a broader studio reevaluation. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has since indicated the film remains a few years out from release, suggesting the project continues moving forward even without a firm timeline.

Waldron’s growing involvement in Marvel’s cosmic and ensemble storytelling extends well beyond Nova, with the writer also attached to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and reportedly contributing to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as well. That expanding portfolio suggests Marvel continues placing significant trust in Waldron’s handling of some of its biggest interconnected storylines.

For now, fans will have to wait and see exactly how deep the Nova film goes in addressing the Xandar tragedy, and whether it draws directly from the “Annihilation” storyline Waldron so clearly admires.
