A Cult Stop-Motion Horror-Comedy Is Sliding Onto Disney+ Right as Spooky Season Kicks Into Gear

Every fall, streaming platforms play a familiar game of dusting off their catalog and repositioning older titles for maximum seasonal impact. It’s a strategy that works especially well for movies that never quite got their due on release, since a well-timed rediscovery window can do more for a film’s reputation than the original box office ever managed.

That’s the situation currently unfolding on Disney+, where a stop-motion horror-comedy has landed at number 10 on the platform’s Top 10 Movies chart. The film shares space with brand-new arrivals like ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ and ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’, as well as fellow animated newcomer ‘Coraline’, which just claimed the number two spot on the very same list.

The title behind that debut is ‘ParaNorman’, which arrived on Disney+ and Hulu at the start of September as part of a packed fall lineup that also included Coraline, according to Variety. The pairing isn’t a coincidence, since both films come from the same studio and were clearly bundled together to lean into the platform’s broader Halloween-season programming push.

That shared studio is Laika, and the timing lines up with something much bigger than a routine content drop. According to IMDb, Laika is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, and part of that celebration involved bringing ‘ParaNorman’ back to theaters this past Halloween season in newly remastered 2D and 3D formats, following the same playbook that made the studio’s 2024 re-release of ‘Coraline’ such a massive success.

That earlier ‘Coraline’ re-release set an extremely high bar, becoming the top-grossing stop-motion film of all time after bringing in $56 million worldwide, according to Bloody Disgusting. Laika clearly hoped ‘ParaNorman’ could tap into a similar wave of nostalgia, kicking off its own anniversary celebrations with the same theatrical formula that worked so well the first time around.

The re-release wasn’t just a straight rerun, either. It came paired with a brand-new short film called ‘ParaNorman: The Thrifting’, directed by Laika’s lead character designer Thibault LeClercq and written by original screenwriter Chris Butler. According to Animation Magazine, the short features Finn Wolfhard alongside Anna Kendrick, who returned to voice Norman’s older sister Courtney, expanding the world of Blithe Hollow well beyond the original film’s runtime.

Butler’s original film has always had a devoted following despite modest initial numbers, having earned $107.1 million against a $60 million budget and picking up Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations for Best Animated Feature along the way. Laika’s own marketing chief, David Burke, described the film as a “breakthrough” for the studio, calling it emotionally rich and visually daring in equal measure.

Kodi Smit-McPhee’s voice work as Norman also helped cement the film’s cult status over time, especially as his career grew considerably in the years since, including a critically acclaimed turn in ‘The Power of the Dog’. That kind of hindsight recognition tends to send curious viewers back toward earlier work, and ‘ParaNorman’ benefits from precisely that effect heading into another Halloween season on a brand-new streaming home.
