‘Silo’ Season 3 Finale Just Became the Show’s Highest-Rated Episode Ever

Apple TV’s dystopian mystery series has spent three seasons slowly winning over skeptics who initially wrote it off as just another prestige sci-fi drama competing for attention against splashier franchises. Compared to stablemates like ‘Severance’ and ‘Pluribus,’ ‘Silo‘ has never generated quite the same awards buzz, lacking the Emmy nominations that have followed those other Apple TV originals.

That relative lack of prestige recognition hasn’t stopped the show from building a genuinely devoted fanbase, one that’s only grown louder as the series has continued unraveling its central mystery about how humanity ended up living underground. After a comparatively lukewarm second season and a slow start to its third, many fans wondered whether ‘Silo’ would ever recapture the sharp focus of its debut run.

That question has now been emphatically answered. The Season 3 finale, titled “Troy,” debuted with a 9.6 rating on IMDb, making it the highest-rated episode in the show’s entire history and surpassing the previous week’s episode, “Farewell.”

That finale beat out “Farewell,” which had itself briefly set the show’s rating record just a week earlier at 9.3. Prior to this season, only one other episode had ever crossed the 9-point threshold on IMDb: the Season 1 finale, “Outside,” meaning Season 3’s final two episodes now account for two of the only three highest-rated installments the show has ever produced.

Much of the finale’s acclaim centers on how it brought together the season’s dual storylines, merging the present-day narrative following Juliette Nichols with the flashback sequences depicting Daniel and Helen centuries earlier, on the very day the silos were first sealed. That structural payoff had been building across the entire season, with fans eager to see exactly how those two timelines would ultimately intersect.

The episode reveals that Daniel, through the sci-fi mechanics of cryogenic freezing, has spent hundreds of years cycling through shifts inside Silo 1, eventually becoming an almost unrecognizable enforcer known as Troy. In a harrowing opening sequence, Troy orders the massacre of nearly everyone attempting to escape Silo 17, revealing that the mysterious deaths attributed to poisoned air were actually the result of deliberate, manual killings carried out to maintain control.

Elsewhere in the finale, Camille outmaneuvers the Algorithm by exposing its true identity, while Juliette formally declares war against Silo 1, setting up significant stakes heading into the show’s next chapter. Critics have similarly praised the episode’s emotional weight, with one review describing a key sequence as among the most harrowing moments in television since ‘Andor.’

Part of what’s made this finale resonate so strongly is just how much the season built toward it methodically, spending its earlier episodes on slower setup before delivering a string of major revelations in its final stretch. That pacing paid off according to fan and critic consensus alike, with the season’s back half consistently outperforming its opening episodes in overall reception.

‘Silo’ also holds a notable advantage over some of its Apple TV sci-fi counterparts in terms of turnaround time between seasons, with roughly 18 months separating Season 2 and Season 3, compared to the two-and-a-half to three-year gaps common for shows like ‘Pluribus.’ That quicker release cadence has helped the show maintain momentum with its audience even without the same level of industry recognition as its more decorated streaming peers.

With Season 3 now concluded and Season 4 already confirmed to close out the series’ story, ‘Silo’ appears to be building toward a finale that fans will have real reason to anticipate, especially given how strongly this season’s concluding chapters have landed.
